Backfire after restart

Hello, I have 1998 318 engine. Starts and runs great, but if I stop and shut it off for short periods it will backfire, hiccup, and spudder after restart. If I take my foot off off the gas when this is happening it idles fine until I re apply the throttle then it continues. This can go on for a few minutes then it goes back to running great. If I put it in N and rev the engine it is normal, but put back in gear and problems are back. This does not happen everytime, but is the case most of the time. Any idea what might cause this? TIA

I would start with the coil probably.

Thanks, How might a Coil contribute to this as only intermittent problem? I am just trying to understand how it works.

The stock coil (if mounted by the alternator) was poor at best, when you shut if off the heat soak from the engine can make them start to act up.

It's only a guess though as there are dozens of things that can cause your symptoms.
