I was out to make a grocery run, and the truck was misbehaving. The gas pedal felt weird. Felt funny to the foot, would maintain speeds with my foot off the gas pedal. I pulled off at a rest stop and stopped the truck, and cut the engine. Decided to restart to see if there was any difference and the engine raced to redline, and all kinds of lights were lit up in the dash. Cut the engine again, restarted, and again racing engine all kinds of lights. Turned if off, and did the only thing I could think of. I put the dog on the leash and went for a long walk. My mind was flooded with WTF!

Then I remember it was something to do with the pedal. Walked back to the truck, look at pedals. OMG, the pedal is missing. How can a pedal be missing? For a second and a half, I was in a state of panic. What happened to my gas pedal?!?!?!

Then I saw it, the rubber mat, that I had taken out yesterday to clean was miss placed and covering the pedal. I pulled the mat, put it back correctly, restarted the truck and all was good. Wow! This was a first for me. Completed my trip and all is 100% again.

Whew!

Yikes, bouncing it off its redline. Glad it didnt bite you while you were on the road. That could have been bad. I could see myself doing the mat install all wrong.

Black mat, black flooring, black pedal, it was bound to happen. Should gotten the pink mat with the zebra stripes. :D

Nice find! I betcha this is/was the cause of many (or even most) of the famous "runaway acceleration" incidents we hear so much about through the years. It involves various manufacturers too. Glad you're safe!!! :favorites13:

I think the same. Toyota took a lot of heat over this many years ago.

When crap goes wrong, seems to make no sense, Take A break. Think about it. In this case it was an easy explanation. Also works on complicated stuff.

Good thinking to clear your head. Go for a walk... In my mind, Common Sense. Including some Critical Thinking. Both attributes lacking in many, these days.

Yup, walking the dog did wonders. I was so so focused on the redline reving and all the warnings that I had completely blocked from my mind the pedal problems.

I thank my clueless puppy ->

I don't know about the newer ones, 5 th gen, but my 14 has little hooks in the floor at rear of the mats to keep them back so it can't do that. they are almost under the front of the seat.
Honda does as well.
i seem to remember another post one time about the same type of thing happening. PS I see it was posted if I had read more posts.

I have some plastic winter mats that I have , never use anymore as they will block the peddle if not careful.

I had a similar issue with my 22 Ram 1500. I cleaned the inside of my truck over the weekend. I got in it a couple of days later. When trying to start it it would just turn over but wouldn’t start. I looked under the hood at wires and checked to see if had fuel. All it would do is turn over. It had 50,000 miles and an extended warranty. I had it towed to the dealership. They called me the next day and told me to come and get it. They told me that they found the mat on the accelerator and the computer would not let it start.
