My ram 1500 is at 135k miles, everything is solid on it especially the transmission and I just replaced the spark plugs and all the coil packs, I just got a quote for the camshaft repair and it was 8000 exactly. Is it worth getting the repair or just buying a new engine or trying to do it myself. If anyone has done the repair before and could weigh in on if it's possible for someone with no real mechanical experience.

For $8000 I would look at a new motor. Seems way too high for a camshaft replacement.

It's really a regional thing, but generally speaking since the last 4 years did happen, 8 grand is fair.
It's gonna cost you 2-3 to do it yourself with hard to find parts and a bunch that need to be done a second time because pushrods bend, I'd use the shop, dyi thread. Many guys are coming back with well over 8 grand for this, dealers getting as high as 12-13.

For ishts and giggles I would call every local independent and ask them what it costs to drop a 5.7 jasper in there with or without delete MDS. Bottom line you have maybe the best year ram ever made for a hemi, I personally think so some disagree, whatever. You have 3.92's? I bet you do and I bet that is what the trans is so solid, if indeed you do have 3,92's and the 2012 with the 68 rfe it is worth saving.

Generally speaking you don't go from limited ability to dropping an engine in one step, but it is all about time and research. I never want to say cant, especially since cam jobs are hit and miss with pushrods.

Shame your not close i do camshaft jobs for 2k. Use to be cheaper around 1400 but now since i have to buy oem lifters because no one makes good aftermarket those alone are $900 lol. A ton of vids on doing camshafts on these trucks its time consuming but not a terrible job you just need to follow instructions and do it the right way no short cuts.

Took apart my cam and my lord... It's been fully worn down. Going to have to buy a new engine. Does anyone know if it's really worth getting a new mds remanufactured engine

I think it is worth it, like I said 2012 is a very good year. As far as MDS/versus non MDS, if it is done right I'd prefer non MDS, but MDS does lubricate better. Obviously these hemi's are still prone to have cam issue;.

You can buy brand new complete Mopar 5.7's,that are basically an R&R job,as they come complete with everything.

I just replaced my engine at 260K.
If I were in this situation I would shop engines online and see if there are some you can option up. Buy an engine with an upgraded/hardened cam, upgraded lifters and a high volume oil pump. Also get one with an MDS delete.

That quote if 8000.00 seems awe fully high to me, I got a quote from Beattie Dodge about 2 months ago, 4200.00 including parts and labour for cam and lifters.

How can you do camshafts swaps for that kind of money. I assume this is parts alone

Ive got $3200 or so just in parts for mine.

I did all my own work on my truck ( retired Mopar dealer tech )

Had I known I was going to spend that kind of money.
I would have just bought a reman long block and been done with it

I was priced a Mopar reman for $5800

How do you get $3200 in parts lol? are you rebuiding the engine or just doing the cam. The Lifters are 900-1000 IF you go oem Im trying a set of sealed power lifters next. The camshaft $350 felpro gasket set $170 Some people do the oil pump to another $120 depends on the person and mileage. I am able to do a camshaft job done in 1 full day depends on weather.

the 6.4 Scatpack oil pump is identical to your run of the mill 5.7 oil pump. The Hellcat 6.2 oil pump is the higher volumn pump.If you bought the 6.4 pump thinking it was the upgraded higher volumn pump it's not.Personally i'd rather use the stock 5.7/6.4 oil pump and up the idle rpm instead

Looks like a good chunk of your $ was redoing the heads i assume? I rebuild my own heads ususaly just clean em up remove the broken bolts with a welder new seals ECT I also re use old manifolds after sanding them flat. I also never replace the MDS Solenoids as I tune them out.

Heads were only A couple hundred bucks I think. All he did was a vacuum ck to see how well they were sealed. Hand lapped just one in to improve it . They were not a But Just new seals and new OEM spings I broke one of the MDS solenoids upon removal, so just replaced them all . As I retained the MDS system
