I recently bought a 2017 Ram 1500. Just started hearing what sounds like a lifter tapping. I was told the 5.7 was bad about wearing the lobes off the cam shaft and that was my problem. Any truth to this?

2017s are supposed to have better lifters and not do this. Does anyone know of any failures on 2017 and up?

From what I've read there have been some, but not to the same extent. It's not something that is that common, just more common than it should be. Lots of Hemi's out there with well over 100k miles and still running strong.

2017 still has crappy MDS lifters. ;)

There's no evidence that it's caused by the MDS lifters. Both MDS and non-MDS have failed.

The roller lifter problem isn't just on the 5.7, it also occurs on GM motors.
It also seemed to be worse on certain years, but even then not common but more than one would hope to see.

Busted manifold bolts on the other hand is much more common and still happens on most years - usually noisier on startup and quiets down as the motor warms up.

Could also be your oil/filter combination if the noise is on startup.

Mine had 5 broken bolts.
Unfortunately, it also had this.

Hopefully your issue is just a broken bolt.

The lifter/cam failure is happening on engines that don't have MDS, like the hemis in challengers that come paired with manual transmissions. This is NOT an MDS failure, no matter how many times we talk about this people just don't seem to get it.
