I see lots and lots of threads for camshaft this and camshaft that and am struggling to find the answer to my issue. I've got a 2009 ram 1500 5.7l. Just hit 140k started misfiring at roughly 134k miles. I've been driving it since 130k for roughly 7 ish months. I drive 20 miles to work every day and where ever else I go. Well, I got the cylinder 1 misfire code at roughly 134k, yet only occurs at 4k+ RPM so I went through the list, tried spark plugs, injector, swapped coils with one I knew was working properly, and Surprisingly, no fix. I replaced the mds solenoid at the front of the engine, I know it controls #1 and I think #3, no solution. At this point I'm pretty set in stone that it is my camshaft, now I don't have any reason to believe I have a seized lifter. I have a slight tick but seems to be from my exhaust since I get some fumes pretty often from driving or romping on it. My oil pressure at idle warmed up roughly 25 psi and driving 45-55 psi. So it seems like the oil pump is a little worn and I want to replace it whenever I do the cam. I do not hear really any ticking that sounds internal other than my exhaust manifold and it doesn't change it always has the same real small subtle exhaust tick. But, I'm looking for a cam kit that isn't going to break the bank but isn't poor quality either. I'm not afraid to spend the extra money to get the better quality in essence make it last as long as possible. My plans were to do a cam, all lifters, timing set, oil pump, and water pump. I feel like I'm missing a thing or two but currently, this is my goal. If someone could give me some guidance that would be fantastic and I am really appreciative.

I went with this kit myself a few weeks ago. I couldn't hear my bad lifter either but it was definitely there. That's how the cam lobe gets ground away.

I don’t prefer to delete mds unless there is some actual upside to it.

The whole reason to do a cam swap is to put in stronger components. That includes removing the possible failure of the mds solenoids causing an oiling issue to the cam. No that is not the reason these cams and lifters generally fail but it is possible. I’m not familiar with any tuners who do aftermarket cams that recommend to keep the mds active

I highly recommend a cam from Greene racing, I have had 2 camshafts from Jay and they have both been good.

Any estimate on the cost of one of these kits? I was just quoted $2,200 from the dealer for cam and lifters... and he didn't think that included gaskets. Would be looking to do cam, lifters, timing chain and ??? (open to recommendations).

I had called one of the dodge dealers near me, told them what the issue was and they said yea sounds like lifters and cam is going out. He asked what I used the truck for, I told him daily driving and a little bit of mudding. He told me, do not buy a mopar cam what so ever. Go aftermarket, you will have the same exact issue is what he told me.

I didn't get an estimate though, sorry.

I know I posted this thread awhile ago I heard something from a couple different places. So explaining my issue, I’ve got a 09 ram 1500 5.7l 4x4. Misfires at roughly 4K rpm on cyl # 1 and last probably a few minutes. Leaves a CEL maybe %10 of the time even though it flashes for maybe 3-5 minutes. Typically it’s when I’m on the highway passing people and it’ll start to misfire and a few minutes go by, my foot still on the gas I can feel the engine shuddering and shaking up a storm while it’s down a cylinder and again with my pedal presses I feel the engine magically go back to normal and gain the bad cylinder back like something is causing it to do it temporarily. Now why I ask my question which is I’ve heard that the PCM could be needed to be reprogrammed because that could be causing a misfire issue like this. Especially since I haven’t seen any change in the motor or how bad or often it happens in the almost 14k miles it’s been since the truck started to do this. I know everyone says on the forums that the cam and lifters are needing replaced. But like I said it’s been acting the exact same since it started at 133k miles and now I’m at 146-147k miles and absolutely hasn’t gotten worse or different. Things I’ve done, changed the fuel injector, spark plugs, swapped coils. No fix. If anyone has any information to confirm or deny that there could be another thing causing this such as a pcm needing reflashed or anything. Thanks.

Pull your valve covers and check movement amount on rockers if one isn’t moving as much as others that would point to cam lobe failure.

Misfire cyl 3, only under load.

Easiest way to confirm is pull that valve cover and watch for less/no movement from cyl 1 rocker arms.
Mine started ~120K miles.
Sorry for the bad news, but it's highly likely that this is your problem. Failed lifter grinds down cam, valve doesn't open properly, misfires.

Update:

I’ve purchase the modern muscle xtreme mds delete cam kit for my ram. I opted in for everything as in mds plugs, hellcats lifters, hellcat oil pump , full timing set, predator programmer. I’ve got the kit in the mail. Just waiting till I get paid to go get some coolant, assembly lube, oil and filter, and I believe a water pump. Trying to think of anything else I need while I’ve got it torn down but this is what I can think of on the spot making this post.

I’m hoping to get it installed 4th of July weekend since it falls on a Monday, I won’t have to take it off of work.

I will post updates and pictures and what not of the journey.

sweet, good luck.
something unexpected I ran into was in removing the old mds solenoids. They break pretty easily trying to get them out. Youtube shows people drilling a screw into them and then pulling them out with a claw hammer, which worked for me.

Oh yea definitely happen to me. I actually tried replacing 1 trying to do whatever I could to See if I could fix the issue and yea they just break. Did the screw into them method with the drill and it worked flawlessly. Obviously it didn’t fix my misfire

Old on left. New on right.
