Ok, so I had a Ram 2014 Outdoorsman that I really loved, but the gas mileage of 16 mgp was just killing me. So I sold it and got a Lexus Hybrid and after a few months, it got totaled from a hail storm. So now I have another sedan that's fun to drive, but it's not a truck. I really miss my truck. I've been staring at Rams online again, but I just know if i get one, the mgp's will drive me nuts. Are there any out there that get better than 16 mgp?

Best ram for gas mileage would be 2wd single cab short bed with a v6. Literally stripped down to nothing. In my very honest opinion it's a truck, you don't worry about gas mileage

The best one, is:

1) That you own and have the pink slip
2) The one that U baby everywhere.
3) Most important, the one that #1 and # 2 apply and never gets run, stays parked... (sic).

My MY 19 Bighorn gets up to 22 mpg on Hwy, works for me......

That's funny. I would want to get something in the 2016 age range if I got one again. I switch cars a lot, but I hate the low mile leases.

I had a MY 15 ED, with the V6 Diesel. If U get a good one, baby it, take care of it, get the GDE tune and maybe a few extra's, there are people getting 25-30 on Hwy, modest driving.

BUT, If U buy a Hemi and worry about fuel mileage, maybe U should get a Prius, and Badge it with a RAM Decal (LOL)

Sorry, LOL, my "Inane" sense of humor

Love the humor. V6 Diesel's are hard to find. There are a lot of V6 Pentastars around. What is the GDE tune?

Get you a truck. If you don't you'll regret it. Preferably one with an unlocked PCM!
My understanding is the PCM unlock is quite a bit of money, what are the advantages?

It's like in the movie Matrix:

Morpheus: "This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes."
The question is, which pill would you choose?

Unlocked PCM and see how deep the rabbit hole goes!

What are the advantages of PCM unlock?
It allows the truck to be tuned, 15+ trucks have an encrypted computer and cant be tuned until it is unlocked

Are there any ram trucks that get better gas mileage than others? Diesel is unfortunately not an option.

Big Horn vs. Outdoorsman? Hemi vs. V6?

A pentastar equipped Ram 1500, even in 4x4 quad cab format can achieve 20-23pg range tank to tank average. Figure about 20% better than the 16mpg you didn't like. It's a savings, but it's not huge. My take is if 16mpg is a hardship for you, it's best to drive something that gets 30mpg.

It's not a hardship, it's more of a mental thing for me.

Pentastar 3.6 V6
The Pentastar is a phenomenal option and will get good mileage. If you’re not towing and gas mileage is key definitely find one with the 3.21 gear set. I have a ‘16 quad cab, V6, Big Horn, 4x4 with 3.55 gears and get 17-19 around town and 20-22 on the highway depending on speed and how hard I accelerate. Obviously, easy throttle application increases fuel mileage.

Also, consider the V6 as a good “value” compared to a Hemi. It’s less expensive to purchase, less expensive to drive and, if you’re a long term owner is less expensive to own. That said, this is all good as long as you’re not doing a lot of towing. If you plan on towing up to 3500 lbs the V6/3.21 combination will get you the best fuel mileage. If you plan on towing over 3500 lbs, definitely go with the V6 with 3.55 gears. If you plan to tow over 5K then the Hemi is the way to go.

I’m gonna throw one last curve your way. If you’re a HP junkie AND will tow up to 5000lbs a Hemi with 3.21 gears will get you fuel mileage pretty close to the mileage of the V6 with 3.55 gear set. Again, this is only a real option if 1) you can’t live without the sound of a V8 and 2) you’re going to be towing more than 3500lbs. If those two don’t apply the Hemi doesn’t make sense.

IMO its better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it! HEMI all the way for me. The advantages of the unlocked PCM are being able to tune the truck for different needs, economy, towing, and plain ol fun! I understand the warranty thing but.....I feel that if I pay good money for something I should be able to get the most out of it!!

The ole pentastar is good. My wife’s very close to getting rid of her car “35mpg” for a crewcab with 8spd v6. She does not like car as much as she thought she did. The v6 drives just fine and is plenty quick for a daily driver.

This is like trying to figure out which model Challenger would be best for offroad ... If a couple MPG’s one way or the other gets your shorts all twisted up, then maybe you need something like a Honda Ridgeline ... You get that much variation when stations change over to Winter fuel ... I get 15 mpg lifted with 35’s and I’m happy as hell
