I have a 2014 ram 1500 and Im aware of the issue with the gas cap being bad, I replaced the cap and the cap light went away, but the cel light came back on, with the code P0440 EVAP leak detected, that was the only code shown on the reader I'm just curious what my next step should be here, I really don't want to take this in until i know exactly what the issue is or if I can do it myself I will.

I've seen almost all the videos tricks and **** on this, imI'm ju looking for professional advice should I replaced the sensor, Purge valve, or just wait it out?

Thanks

P0440 General evap failure. A leak can cause it but that’s not the only cause. Could be a bad ESIM,purge solenoid, blocked hose, wiring or PCM fault.

If the only code you’re getting is P0440 then there is a good chance a leak is not the issue.

I'm just trying to narrow the issue down without throwing money around, it's been about 3 months of dicking around with it, like I said I took it in to get scanned and got one P0440 code, that being said where should I start if you assume it isn't a leak.

It's possible that evap code will go away after more miles. After replacing the gas cap, if the gas cap light went off and evap code remained, it may end up clearing next.

Experienced that on my 2014 when I had to take temporary measures to fix a gas cap light issue.

If you bother to read through this, my issue has not been fixed as it states in the first post. It came back for good. I believe it's my canister

I'm certain I was reading some of your older post's, did your light go off after a few refills or what did you end up doing?

I was able to get the light to go off by putting some Vaseline on the rubber of the gas cap. Lasted about 6 months each time and worked. Then it stopped working. Got a new gas cap and solenoid and no change. Have checked all my lines and they are good. I really think it is my canister. That's a $200 fix and it looks like I am going to have to drop my tank to replace it, so that's why I have been slacking on replacing it.

I have a tuner so can reset my pcm. But I do recall once that I did not use it, the gas cap light went out and then after that the evap code and cel light went out. I don't think it should take you a couple fills, probably no more than a couple hundred miles or a few key turn cycles. If it doesn't go away, you then have some other issue.

It's been about a half tank and the light came on ³/4 while the truck ran diagnostics so its been longer than that, trying to figure out the problem without taking it in here.

Have you cleared the code at all? If you haven't i'd do that and see if it comes back...

Brian, just to add to the above advice, can you smell a hint of fuel vapors anywhere around the filler tube or tank area at all?

id say I smell a small vapor order about under where the fill tube is, after running for about three or four minutes or so, everything looks good no cracked lines that I can see hard to tell exactly.

I just cleared codes again and we'll see what happened I will keep you guys posted since this seems to be a 2013 - 14 issue and in general an annoying ram issue. I don't know where to start ill ether start at the rear by the fill tube or like I posted previously up in the engine bay where the easier stuff is to locate, but I don't want to throw money at it either since I am trying to save buy not taking it in im looking for professional accurate advice.

The Light came back i did smell a little vapor from around near the fill tank from underneath I'm thinking it's the canister, I guess my question is what should I tell the michanic to look at so I don't get taken advantage of "canister" or something under the hood.

Did you replace the purge valve? It is an easy and inexpensive fix. I am not one to recommend throwing parts at it, I did at least replace that, but it did not work, only because it was cheap, quick fix and a common solution did I bother to give it a try.

Although I suspect my canister is bad, I really am not sure. As you did, I checked all the lines and they look fine.

There could be another purge valve by the tank that could be bad and even a bad tank pressure sensor could cause an evap code.

Funny thing about this problem is you see a lot of people asking about it, but they rarely come back with the solution they found in any forums or blogs I have read through.

Quite frankly, if I do swap my canister and that fixes the issue, then I'm going to replace everything else in the system I can if I don't see any visible cracks in it. Canisters rarely go out unless they you have a crack or habitually top off your tank at fill up. I don't ever top off my fill ups. And if there is no crack, then that tells me something else in the evap system likely caused it to go bad, so replace it all.
