I keep reading about the catch can is a "must have" addition on the 4th generation ram. What I cannot find is some documented detrimental effects of not having one installed. I understand that getting oil into the intake is not exactly a good thing but how bad can it get? Is there documented sludging leading to intake malfunction (such as the turn of the century toyota 3.0l v6 engines)? What other effects have owners experienced due to this issue?

Most members add them for the performance benefits. Without a catch can, that oil will mix with your fuel in the intake manifold which will lower the overall octane rating of the fuel. For anyone that has a tuner installed, this is a terrible thing as less fuel with cause spark knock and spark knock will cause the computer to pull timing...pulled timing then results in a loss of power.

I have also installed many throttle bodies that were so caked in oil on the back side of the blade that it has to be a restriction on airflow. The throttle bodies we swap for guys with catch cans always look new whereas those without catch cans are covered in oil.

On a mostly stock truck, you wont see much benefit from installing a catch can, but if you drive the truck hard or plan to modify it, then it is a must have in my opinion.

Had one on my 2010 Hemi Ram since new, traded it in at 64,000 miles on my 2013 Hemi Ram. Before trading it, I pulled the intake tube off the throttle body, still looked brand new and clean with no oil in the intake. That's proof for me. If I had not put the catch can on, I guarantee it would of been pretty nasty.

No modifications are needed on the cover to make it fit. The instructions tell you to remove it so that you can access the PCV hose and install your new hoses. Once the catch can is installed, the engine cover will go right back on as if the catch can wasn't there.

Ditto Matt's comments. I have the S&B and BT Catch Can. I had to take the engine cover off to get at the PCV hose assembly and make replacement hose connections. Then, I put it back on. :weld:

A lot of the Vararam guys leave them off because with that big tray on top of the engine, you can't really see the engine cover. :33:

I have a question now - With an Air Grabber - the PCV goes to a filter and not back into the airbox - So, other than a collection point in a can vs. changing the filter, what does a can do?

Its a different hose. The breather filter from the Vararam kit is going to replace the hose that comes out from the oil cap on the drivers side of the motor and then runs into the factory airbox. The catch can is going to replace the hose that goes from the back passenger side of the intake manifold to just under the throttle body.

No, the PCV vent is on the passenger side and goes into the TB. The catch can would interrupt this flow of oil mist.

The crankcase vent crosses over from the dirver's side on a stock engine, but is truncated into a filter with VR.
With an S&B the crankcase vent goes into the air box before the filter.
Stock configuration, the CC vent enters into the top of the air box, which would be after the filter. :Sumo:

Guess you in the Order - And damn it, this is the last thing I'm buying from anyone for awhile! :evil27: Or at least till Monday :Moon:
