I have a 01 Ram 5.2 I recently acquired. It stalls at idel while at a stop light etc. I'm fairly certain that the plenum is blown and that the cat is clogged. Has anyone took a rubber mallet to a cat to break up the build up? I've heard of it done to restore flow temporarily. I'll be going to true dual straights soon so I'm just looking for a quick fix. Any advice is appreciated.

To my knowledge you can't bust up a cat with a rubber mallet. If you've got a sawzall and can get some of the real nice stainless band clamps you can hack the pipe near the cat, remove the front O2 sensor, take a piece of rebar or something, smash it out and clamp the two pieces of pipe back together and how it seals.

Thanks for the reply. I much appreciate it.

That's exactly my plan actually. But a buddy suggested the hammer trick and I pondered whether it had been attempted before by anyone here.

Sure thing.

Usually the hammer trick is to test to see if the cat is coming apart. Just remember to start it every once in a while to blow the junk out.
