In searching this forum, I ran across the writeup for the coolant change in the hemi.

Does the thermostat housing have a gasket, or is it just the thermostat seal?

Additionally, if i pull the tstat, I can simply do the distilled water fill, run, and repeat several times, right?

I dont want to screw around with the block drains either, so should i use a stronger mix on my replacement coolant? If so, what would be recommended?

I live in SWFL.

Going with Mopar coolant, btw.

Thanks again for the awesome site.

So you have 10 year OAT yes? And whatever or however you flush it, you should stick with pre mix to make it easy and keep 100% legit. If you go off script and start doing a distilled water flush, the ratio % of coolant to water will be off. I have done plenty of flushes, even for other guys, it is rare that someone has the starch for that many flushes, it usually ends up like 2 or 3 at best. And if you are not doing block bolts at most it will be 3 gallons of concentrate versus 3 gallons distilled water. So when you start your flush/filling just pre mix before you start. Yes I do realize you waste a lil good coolant this way, but the ratio will be correct. You start distill water flushing good luck getting the level correct. Plus you save some good money buying concentrated, to be honest it might just be 2 gallons which =s 4 gallons. I'd just have an extra one on hand. just a thought

So, if I dont use the block drains, you are recommending just flushing with 50/50 a couple times?

I have about 1-1/2 gallons of premixed 10 year oat here, and was going to buy 2 more gallons of concentrate as well, along with a compliment of distilled water.

Would you recommend a tstat changeout as well?

Going to do transmission service, rear diff, belt, and brake fluid as well here very shortly. I am overdue I'm sure, but want to get it caught up.

How many miles do you have on it, that would greatly impact what needs to be done now vs later.

It has 107k on it. Have done my plugs already. No towing has been done, doesn't even have a hitch.

Was actually going to have local Ram dealer do the transmission service, but they never called me back after calling them twice.

Replaced my battery about 5 months ago, and my headlight switch (due to failure) when I did my plugs.

So, she's a bit overdue for this other stuff. Just getting her up to date.

Yep then it’s definitely time to do all those things and replacing the thermostat wouldn’t be a bad idea either. Don’t know which transmission you have, whether it’s the RFE or the ZF but if you’re mechanically inclined You could save a whole bunch of money by doing the work yourself. Whatever you do don’t flush the transmission, drop the pan and do it the right way.

8 speed trans, have already posted about it here.

Mechanical inclination is good as well. Trying to make sure I get things right.

She is my daily driver and I would like to keep her as long as possible.

Stealerships scare me, but was prepared to throw away the money with them on the transmission service, but lack of customer service pushed me to DIY.

When I was at about 45k miles, I took it in to get recalls done, and they showed me this sheet how my alignment was off front and rear. I asked how it was possible with no pull, and even tire wear over the approx 18k miles since I had it. The service guy stammered a bit and said, "You're not the first to say this. Maybe our machine is off." Yeah, maybe.

Did 2 drain and fills yesterday. Got a late start, and ran out of time. Only got about 3-1/4 gallons out.

Was trying to go easy on the petcock and had it pop out on me. Got a good blast of it. Tastes like ****.

I will be doing this again in near future just to make sure i get it changed over. Have about 3 gal of 50/50 left, so will get another jug or two when time comes.
