I could use some advice guys...

2010 5.7 Hemi, 131K miles

It's been pretty damn hot here in Central Texas and I have been eye-balling my coolant temperature accordingly. Sure enough, that bad boy posted 244 degrees on me today and then threw a coolant red alarm indicator on the dash. I was going 80, truck full with the family and it was 94 degrees according to the truck. I told everyone to roll down the windows because the AC was going off, and the heater was coming on. The temp then dropped down to 224 and we got home safely.

After letting it cool down, I inspected my radiator and overflow reservoir. Both at full limits. I looked for noticeable leaks underneath... nothing.

I also looked at the block, the hoses, the waterpump...no steamshot (white splatter).

Months ago I moved to a V6 Efan, installed a 180 T-stat (CST) and had Hemifever adjust my tune. At the same time I did a full flush on coolant with Mopar 50/50. Truck has been running like a dream for months... until this week.

This afternoon, just as a precaution, I drained 2 gallons of coolant and replaced with clean distilled water.

E-fan works fine, no wobble, no slow RPMs. Blows quite strong. I know the T-stat releases at 180, because I use a funnel that allows me to put extra coolant/water in the bowl and at exactly 180, it dropped into the radiator. I burped the hoses and chased out all the bubbles. I made sure the heater was on to ensure coolant was getting to and thru the heater core.

I then rev'd the engine on and off for a while. Here comes the coolant out of the radiator... 190, 195, 201, 215, 220....240. F_CK!

Could I have a bad waterpump?? Next steps?

Thanks guys

Subbed.

From what you've described, sounds like the water pump isn't moving the coolant like it should. Not sure if the Hemi water pump has a plastic impeller but maybe it's missing some fins. Or the shaft is loose on the impeller and it's not spinning the impeller as fast as the shaft...

THanks man. Also, belt seems tight and no "whining noise at all in the engine. Got me scratching my head for sure.

Yeah, quickly coming to grips with the likelihood the bearing is shot and it’s just not passing coolant. I see one at Advanced Auto for $100, with limited lifetime warranty. Probably do this manana. I will just get a new belt while I am at it.

Yeah its the most likely candidate. The tstat obviously works and the radiator isn't blocked if the coolant gets sucked down when the tstat opens...

Best of luck on the water pump replacement! If it was my truck, while i had it apart, I'd be inspecting everything up front..tensioner etc. Clean the machined surface perfectly before installing the new pump and I'd be tourqing the bolts to exact specifications. I wish I was close, because i would gladly help free of charge! An extra set of hands is a godsend when doing certain repairs. Again, I hope all goes well for ya!!

Thanks Devildog. Yeah, I got some 0000 steel wool, and I plan on torquing the specs for sure. Serendipitously, I took the clutchfan off already, ********** the shroud, etc. So, getting to the w-pump is gonna be easier.

Got the pump, limited lifetime warranty and the dude behind the counter floated me a $20 coupon. Thing only cost $80.

Traced out the unit and its 12 bolt holes. Apparently these things have different sizes all over it, so as I pull one, I will put it in its place.

Gonna get a cup of joe in me, drop a deuce, and turn on some F'n fans in this here hot garage. OK, too much info, I get it.

I have an Alldatadiy account if you need any torque specs or anything
Thanks, yeah that site is awesome. Been member for a few years. (That's how I figured out the door carrier plate and headliner extraction, incidentally).

LOL

I'm curious to see what the impeller looks like and how bad the proceedure is.

Different note, how are you liking the efan?

Suspect we will be seeing more coolant threads as we gut out this hot weather. It will help all of us to know what the outcome is. We know your vehicle is well maintained. As said, many of us would enjoy being there helping you if we were closer. Looks like a quality pump. Fitz (enjoy??? that could be suspect)
