So Jay was right all along, it was the t-stat, I’m glad you got that figured out.
With that many miles on the water pump, just look at it as preventative maintenance
Yeah, I just couldn’t get my head around a $25 piece causing all that havoc, still looking shiny new. In retrospect, I should have pulled it first and done the troubleshooting from there. Stubborn as a mule I guess. Like you said, it’s PM.

Keep us posted, I'm curious on what happens after your new tstat is installed.

Well, well, well. I pulled the T-stat, left the gasket in, bolted the radiator hose back up, filled the radiator and fired her up. I turned on the heater first, to get the coolant thru the heater core then I went full AC. She never got hotter than 190. I was giddy, so I got behind the wheel and jumped on the freeway. Never above 194, YES! Then I got off, found a vacant parking lot, put her in park and rev'd her to 5K RPMs for 2-3 minutes. 228 is the highest I went. I pulled out and headed back home. 228 -- 225 -- 220 -- 205 -- 190. I was cruising thru town at 40 mph and it was 95 degrees outside.

I undoubtedly replaced a water pump that did not need replacing (but at least it's new and hey I know how to do it now). I am cancelling my order on the new radiator and hoses. I have a JET 180 T-stat coming from Matt at MoesPerformance early this week.

So this CST T-stat looks innocuous enough. No visible defects. Wonder why the failure.

Can I drive this baby until my T-stat comes in? I essentially have to get to operating temperature before I put it in gear?

Thanks everyone for your advice and comments. I really appreciate the insight -- especially to those of you who said that T-stat could be sketchy even if it is relatively new. I will know for certain once I put that Jet T-stat in.

Incidentally, that is 2500 RPMs at 88Mph on 35s with 4.56. So for those worried about redlining on the freeway, nope!

Incase you missed it in my other post, when you go to install your new tstat, make sure the burp valve (aka dog bone valve) is positioned at the highest point. Looking g at your pic, it's not positioned this way and can cause some air to be trapped in your system, causing some spikes in cooling system temps. When I installed my first 180 thermo ten years ago on my '06 300C, I was getting temps 30 degrees higher than I should have and couldn't figure out why. This positioning was the culprit.

Wow, I just looked at this. Interesting that the thermostat is not marked "this way up" or anything or that no documentation I can find points this out. But what you say makes sense. Since I have a JET 180 T-stat coming, I will make a point of having it orientated the way you describe. Thanks for the callout. This is really helpful! :waytogo:

I could have saved hours and $80 if I had known this from the first. I hope this helps others out. Learn from my mistakes, brothers.

I put one in backwards once and it took me hundreds of bucks to figure out that I wasted hundreds on new parts for a frigin backwards stat! I couldn’t believe myself nor forgive my idiotic self lol.

Look at the bright side, with your mileage, you've at least got the preventative maintenance done, which could have left you stranded if the water pump went out.

For some reason, I don't see the burp valve orinetation on these thermostats as emphasized on the trucks as it was on the 300C's. Over on the 300C forum, it was considered a must do. Maybe it isnt as imperitive on the truck and has something to do with the engine height and cooling system layout variances in the truck vs the 300C or maybe the different coolant. Who knows, but I'll always make sure mine is positioned at the high point.

Indeed. I wish I had a new harmonic balancer handy, as this would have been the ideal time to put one on. :doh2:

Yeah backwards would have sucked, lol. But what @Jwithing is talking about is this little part -- it should to be pointing up for proper function.

Fortunately, pulling a T-stat is 2 13mm bolts, to be retorqued to 10 ft/lbs. I have a new waterneck (Billet clear satin) on the way too. The least I could do after all this trouble, LOL.

Inadvertently quoted. I was just making fun of myself.

I’ve been there before, orientation of the stat issues, had to learn that one the hard way though.

That’s pretty cool that you can get a clear goose neck.

Yessir. I have a new Tstat (Jet 180) but since pulling the CST, I have had no issues and no temps hotter than 205. It was pointed out that T-stat must be orientated to allow proper function. Just not documented anywhere! Good advice nonetheless.

When you get back from Tx Ramfest. I am curious about the 180 thermo. I take it, this was put into your 2010. Any conflict with the ECM. I want to do this in the 2018 6.4. But I am concerned that these new highl control ECM's may say, no, temp is not right, can't close op tempi loop or,,, something like that.

27D9BBD6-8F52-4C1E-9F87-15BD15228D2B.jpeg No issue whatsoever other than it sticking, lol. I will put the new one on next weekend. I put this in as well as the V6 Efan, and had Hemifever update my tune for it. I am really pleased with the truck’s performance. I also run a Vararam, so it cleaned the engine bay up too. Here’s a shot as I began detailing the engine for the meetup tomorrow. Next up is a 2800 stall torque converter, but that has to wait a while. I am in the dog house for modding too much lately lol.

Nah, as soon as I pulled the T-stat, the problem went away. I am going to be putting in the replacement (and orient the vent valve to the top) accordingly.
