5w30 or 5w20 you been running? Im in the middle of nowhere out here but the partsource an hour from here only carry a couple redline additives and no oils. They said no one has enough money to use it so it sits too long.
Asked them to get me and they said they cant there system wont allow it haha.
I ran 5w20 during the winter and just changed out to 5w30 last week. Ordered front and rear diff fluid as well. I’m In isolation Along the James Bay Coast. I hear ya about being in the middle of nowhere! 20820 RP oil filter Is what I’m running.

Well, I have to admit you Canadians are a wild bunch!

I RV in Phoenix, AZ during the winter when you snow birds go there.

Drunken parties, running around naked, sex in the streets is only part of it for you guys.
That’s just the tip of the ice berg as you have mentioned!

Yea i just found someone who can bring some in $16.40 quart lol.

Ok so my truck has 50k miles on it,No tics runs nice. Im buying redline so should i just buy 5w30 and run it all summer to winter then switch to 5w20 or should i just run 5w30 all year long?
Whats better to run in our engines if it has no tick issues yet?Rather do this right or what most of you guys do to prevent issues down the road.I can get either 5w20 or 5w30 same price.

I personally ran 5w20 during winter and got the cold piston slap. Going to run 0W20 during the winter here (Around -45C) and running 5w30 during summer. I also threw in a 15oz bottle of lube gard that really isn’t needed it you running redline and no tick. Redline before tick would be ideal, sadly for me, I started after the fact, the tick I had was very faint, however Redline calmed her down.
Forgot to mention that every truck
Is different as well. Run what your truck likes after testing a few methods.

All great info, and running 5w30 redline not going to affect millage or anything.?

Our winters here manitoba get dang cold, minus 30 to 45 is the normal haha. Last winter we had a couple minute 49 days and nothing would start even plugged in.

If you get cold piston slap don't mess around, go straight to 0w20 redline with those numbers. But wait til it's gets cold and you actually have piston slap a couple times before changing it.

I've been thinking about this for a while now. So the consensus seems to be Redline 5w-30 oil, with something like the Royal Purple 10-48 oil filter.

For those who have done this swap, have you noticed a reduction in tick just by using redline 5w-30, while continuing to use the OEM filter? In other words, is the redline oil enough, or do you need a better filter too?

Reason I ask: I live in Ontario and just found a source for the redline oil, but having trouble tracking down RP filter in stores.

From everything i saw in here and others any good filter is fine like the fram ultra, amsoil purolator boss.

My self im doing a redline 5w30 with amsoil filter next week as thats what i could get.

do you have hemi tick? I'd try 0w30 for your area for a year round option as a first shot if or if you didn't have hemi tick. read the filter thread in my sig, amsoil ea is royal purple clone if you can find that. fram ultra another good option.

5w30 basically killed my tick, 99% effective, the truck sits for extended periods the only time I get any tick at all. guys in cold states have similar luck with 0w30 but also have less cold piston slap.

Just purchased RL 5w30 to go with my NAPA Platinum (Wix) filter. Oil change will happen this weekend. Had PUP but used it up for the Focus and the wifes Traverse.

Nebraska winters can be pretty harsh so I might switch it up like @Hemi395 does with 5w30 for summer and 0w30 for winter.

I couln't find Royal Purple filters either but I use the Wix XP filter from Rock Auto. If you want to go local...the Fram Ultra is a good choice.

My 2017 Ram with 19,850 miles has a occasional hemi tick at the first morning start up. I contacted Nick and ordered Redline 10W30 and also ordered a Royal Purple filter from Amazon. I have been using Valvoline Synthetic and Nick said the Redline would be a big step in protection. They are changing the oil in the morning. My question is how long do you all recommend between oil changes? Mostly stop and go driving with some highway miles also. Thanks!

Hopefully the 10w30 redline helps, but I'm not sure where you got that info, the 10w30 was the worst redline for killing tick in my truck, as noted a few times. The good news is it is one of the better redline formulas, 30 weight with no vii's, the bad news was that it wasnt as effective at tick. The one thing about vii's is they make the oil flow better at start up, and has been proven this is something beneficial to hemi tick.

So here is where I'd go, keep using 10w30 if it helps, if not switch to 5w30, if you live in cold region of missouri then 0w30, both the other 30 weights are more effective at killing hemi tick. I'd say the first redline run if it is many freeway miles would be around 7500, you can push future oci's in a few ways, pm me and inquire about that after you do the 7500 on this one. You say mostly stop and go, maybe 6k miles the first run, depending on how it is running, I can extend that cheaply if it is working good, pm into the run, I will discuss. Only buy 10w30 again if it killed the tick, and let us know what % it was effective at killing the tick, cool? If the truck still ticks after 500 miles BUT is better than before, again PM me I have a move there as well.

Well I messed this up. I went back and looked at my order and I did order 5W30. Thanks Burla, I will let you know if it helps with the tick. I don't know where I came up with 10W30!

I have a 14 5.7. purchased at 69k. when I first switched to redline I went 7500 miles and did a used oil analysis with tbn reading. I was told to go on out to 10k. Second oil change was at 8130. I did another uoa with tbn and was again recommended to go to 10k. I'm not exactly comfortable going 10k, but the analysis was showing the oil was supporting it. I will always do a used oil analysis from here on out. It's a small price to pay to keep me updated with the health of my motor. I now have 86.5k miles and have 2 great low wear analysis. I agree with @Burla and would go 7500 miles and get an analysis done. I drive zero highway. I am curious how highway driving effects our engines. I'm a firm believer these hemis needs working. Not a beating, but getting into it often. Don't just putt around at low rpm where factory programming wants you.

And don't give up on redline after 500 miles. Stick with it!! Commit to a full run. It may get slightly worse before it gets better. But it will get better.
