Hi all, I looked through this forum and seen some threads about headlights that turn off and on intermittently but mine isn't doing that, it is a different problem.

We have a 2011 Sport and the small DRL on the drivers side doesn't come on but the actual headlights work like they should. Is there more than one bulb in that headlight housing, how does it work?

With all the threads about loose headlight plugs, bad controllers and bad grounds I thought I would ask if what is going on with mine is just a bad headlight bulb or if it was one of these problems.

I ask because our truck is still under warranty but when we phoned to have the headlight bulb replaced they said that they can do it but if they take it apart and its the controller, that the controller is not covered under the warranty and they would charge us. I guess it doesnt pay to pay for the extended (bumper to bumper) warranty, I will remember that the next time I purchase a vehicle.

Thanks

There is a high and low beam bulb (at least in the 2015). It could be as easy as a filament in the bulb has burnt out... (some bulbs use 2, such as ones that are used as both a regular beam and high beam). Have you tried changing the bulb at all?

Well to check if its a bulb, turn your high beams on and look. On your headlights there should be two lights on in each housing. Your DRL and high beam are the same bulb.

Your DRL and high beam are the same bulb.

Yes they are but run at 50% power... but all the same, if your high beams are on, and both sides work, it's not the bulb.

Now saying that, Dodge in Canada does some funky stuff with the DRL's when you hit the signal lights. Turns the DRL off on the side that's signaling so oncoming traffic gets a better view of the signal on that side.

If you have the quad set up ( independent hi beam and low beam... 2 bulbs per side).... Yes the high beams are DRL's.

Dual set up ( not common on Sport trims... but hey... anythings possible) the single beam light bulb is dual filament and the DRL's run the hi beams at 50% power.

The newer projector types use the signal light LED's under the headlight as the DRL's.

So if you do have the quad set up as I've described above, and one Hi beams is not coming on as a DRL, but does work when you hit the high beams, then yes, I would have to agree with your service department that controller has an issue.

On my Canadian Quad set-up, when I hit the hi beams.... all 4 head lights fire. The fogs will go out while in hi-beam mode.
