So I should reinstall the doors on my old dodge?
Does your old dodge even have a ZF based 8spd transmission that has the auto-park feature? If not then there's no point. The ZF 8 spd trans are shift by wire, unlike the RFE transmissions which have a mechanical linkage.

I drive with my door open sometimes and the RAM safety feature is very annoying. For $17 problem solved. Including the annoying ding ding ding if your passenger doesn’t want to buckle up.

I use my “dogs buckle” thing that I got to buckle him into a seat. Clips into the buckle is about a foot long with a clip a the end.

I have to set traffic cones approximately 50' apart
I am not about to latch a door or the seat belt to do that

If i keep my speed down to a slow walking pace, i can make it work, the transmission will not shift into park.
( i don't mean to infer that i am walking near the truck )

My Service Adviser wants me to be safe & he wants me to allow them to do a TSB, Recall, or whatever. It would force me to close the door & possibly use the seatbelt.
I have the feeling that he will take it upon himself to have the Tech do it in spite of my wishes & then tell me that the Tech misunderstood & that it can not be switched back.

I have to have my door open every time that i park the Ram in my parking spot.
If i park inches too far back, i would be blocking a side walk
If i park inches to far forward, i am partially blocking another tenants parking space.
The room is so short, is the reason that i could not buy a Crew Cab

When one of the other tenants needs to move in larger furniture, they ask me to move the Ram

My current neighbor gives me a bit of extra room, by parking off center

The cement line to the left of my Ram is the property line, anything over that line can be given a parking ticket
I have to see that line in the cement when parking, therefore my door is open

Blind spot or donut mirrors will allow you to see that line in the mirror..............Not saying you have to, just giving you an alternative.

I can't have anything blocking my mirror, i use my mirrors more than the average drivers
I have to be the eyes for the vehicle in front or in back of me, as well as myself

Vehicles like this have to have guidance from the rear & sometimes ahead of them
KPYnmz.jpg
If you notice, he can't use the trucks mirrors, so i use mine & let him know what is happening behind us

I got the seatbelt extender from "Seat Belt Extender Pros"
Just the buckle extender. Works great on my 21 Longhorn

Now if "mad-women" unbuckles the chime does not start while she deals with grandkids/dogs. I ended up getting another for the driver side because of the annoyances described above. Now door open, move a few feet, etc. is easy and auto-park/brake still works fine when shifted into park.

I should have bought 2 the 1st time and saved a few coins

Occasionally around the house or in the hills I hop in and leave the door open to drive a short distance. Or should I say I did before I got my latest Ram. Now there's a safety feature that won't allow that. Any way to remedy that situation?
Yes, close the door.

Not sure how fast you are thinking, but you can go forward and backward with the door open if you keep the brake pedal lightly pressed before moving. Brake won’t even be on. Works great for low speed movement. So I ride both brake and gas pedal at the same time when I’m doing this. But the brake is never on unless I press harder.

I wish I had had the auto park on my '14 Longhorn last year! Backed my 5th wheel into storage unit, disconnected and pulled up. I needed to get out for something. Thought I put it in park, opened the door, jumped down and the rig started backing up. Before I could get up and get my foot on the brake the drivers door hit the bollard protecting the building and wrapped the door around so it was touching the front fender. (Cummins got sum torque!)

The Cherokee's set the electronic parking brake if the door is open. Ask me how I know... ;)

Buy a 3" seatbelt extender and leave it plugged in.
Usually the excuse for leaving the door open while trying to drive the truck is to see while backing up. Don't see the reason to leave to door open anytime a vehicle is moving, just an opportunity for the door to get damaged
I am not sure if you have ever backed up an enclosed snowmobile trailer into a tight spot without tow mirrors but being able to look back out the door makes life a lot easier. The same for backing a boat trailer down a narrow boat ramp without dropping one of the trailer wheels off the side of the ramp under water. You can see this stuff when looking back out of an open door. Me personally, I can't see stuff like this well enough using a standard mirror.

I agree its good for stuff like that. On the flip side I suspect I would have backed my covered snowmobile trailer into something and/or backed a wheel of my boat trailer off the side of one of those narrow boat ramps several times over the years if I could not have looked back out of an open door while backing up. For the way I use a truck the cons of having it seem to outweigh the pros.

Yes, this would be a nightmare if you had auto park. People that make 'safety' rules such as requiring this autopark never think of the dangers created. Many times safety features and devices cause more hazards than they prevent. I go in a lot of industrial facilities and see this quite often.

I could give to loads of cow manure whether someone gets hurt if they want drive with the door open, more concerned about the potential pointless damage to the truck.
Actually with auto-park on the truck works in your favor, just open the door and when you get out the truck will put itself in park saving you more time as your not having to shift into park. It's a win win..the door is safer and not having to shift to park is quicker than not closing the door. Plus not shifting into park only takes one hand to open the door.
Well, the scenario you describe would never happen the way I use my truck but autopark is a PITA for me when I am trying to look backward out of an open door when backing up a snowmobile trailer or backing a boat trailer into the water. If I cannot defeat it, it definitely causes more safety hazards than it would ever prevent in my case.

WOW.
NO. BODY.
GETS. IT.

This is how you can have the truck in gear and keep the driver side door open on a 1500 Ram with AutoPark without buying anything.

First, you can use the seat belt (as you are normally required to do by law in all 50 states -- buckled around your sorry personage) and simply open the door!

As an alternative, you can also BUCKLE THE SEAT BELT BEHIND YOURSELF. If you don't understand how this is possible, please follow these highly detailed and sarcastic instructions:
1. Stand outside your truck at the driver's door. (this is on the left side of most vehicles in most of the world but on the right side in Great Britain and selected other nations, like Japan, Australia etc, etc, etc. Local laws apply here and you will have to know your own local laws. No, I don't know what side of the truck people use to drive on in Texas, as the only time I've ever driven in Texas was last winter and there was no salt or sand on the road in a three week ice storm and there was ice all over and people were driving on every side of the road, and the shoulder and trying the ditches too. ;-) It was fun. OK then. Sorry about that.
2. Open driver's door (of the exact same truck).
3. While still standing outside of truck firmly grasp the metal buckle tab of the three point safety belt. You should recognize this by now, it's been in vehicles since the mid 1970s. You normally put this around your body while seated. Except in Texas. It seemed like nobody used seat belts in Texas when I was there last winter. In the three week ice storm. ;-)
4. Lean inside the vehicle (or climb if you are short like me) and while doing so INSERT that metal buckle tab into the driver's seat buckle. (In case you are not familiar with this device (in Texas again), it sticks up from the seat towards the back of the lower seat cushion where it joins the upper (mostly vertical) seat cushion -- and is to your right side (again in the USA) of where you normally sit while driving!
5. Enter truck as you normally do, and the seat belt will be behind you!
6. Now put the truck in gear and open the door. It will stay in gear. And it moves.

Doing this allows you to move about freely, leave the door open, lean out and even stand on what we used to call the running board of the truck. Miracles never cease. And it doesn't cost a cent.

You know the best part about this thread is that none of us seem to know how to spell oPen.
