What happens if the drivers door switch were to fail and read open while cruising at speed without the seat belt being used?

Does that mean that your transmission goes into autopark at 50 or 60 mph going down the highway? Wouldn't that be one hell of a party?
The TCM will protect the transmission. If there is a request for change of gear that could potentially damage the transmission it will not make the change.
Try shifting the ZF 8spd transmission into Reverse or Park while driving down the freeway and you get a notification on the dash to shift the truck back into drive, if you don't shift back to drive in a few seconds the transmission goes into neutral.

That is good to know. I thought for sure there would have to be protection for this. I sure as hell wasn't going to try it out though.

That transmission feature was on a 1953 Buick
If you were driving down the highway & for whatever reason the lever was moved to reverse.
The transmission went into what i assume was Neutral, but when it happened, there was a noise, it sounded like someone put a playing card on a bicycle & the wheel spokes make a clicking sound

What you were actually hearing on those old autos, was the transmission trying to shift into reverse but not being able to mesh, thus the palying card sound of the gears clicking past each other. NOT good for the transmission. If you slowed down enough they would SLAM into reverse.

I think i will get some of those, just for the noise silencer
My relatives have to pull a boats & trailers down a one lane road that was paved at one time, now there are major mud holes in it.
They move a bit & get out when backing up.
That ding silencer would be perfect.
They call it the river road, it is more like a jeep trail through the brush & trees

So why would just doing up the seat belt behind u not do the same thing. Other question, does having the seatbelts connected stop the dinger warning when u open the door in drive, doesn't on mine. I was able to silence the dinger for seatbelts not buckled no problem but never heard of being able to defeat the door open dinger.

There is a work around for the Seatbelt warning chime, which turns it off just flashes the light. It is in the threads, been so long, I do not remember what is was. It was in the old Senior Files, which got deleted when the powers to be made that decision.

HERE IT IS:

I haven't seen this any where on the forum, but found out how to disable the seatbelt chime while driving. The seat belt light on the EVIC is still on though. If any one is interested this is what to do...... Worked on MY 15 ED and MY 19 Bighorn.

1. sitting in the truck buckle the seat belt.
2. turn on ignition without starting the truck.
3. wait for the seatbelt light to go off on the EVIC
4. with in 10 seconds, unbuckle, rebuckle 3 times. leaving the seat belt buckled the third time.
5. Turn off ignition. you should hear a chime confirming the change.

The seat belt warning is put on seat belt, put ignition to run without starting as soon as dash clears buckle and unbuckle three times. Finish with buckled up. Turn off ignition. Dingger will no longer sound.

I was referring to the seat belt chime, using that device mentioned above
We could drive slowly down the river path with a boat trailer
Having the door closed is not an issue in itself
BUT having to close the door & fasten the seat belt every 30 feet, is just too much

Thank you for that work around Dean2

I personally love the autopark, as well as the other safety features on my 2020 RAM. However, improvements could be made, and I do believe that a feature selection ability in the settings for the vehicle would be much appreciated. RAM and other OEMs need to keep that in mind. Especially on highly utilitarian style vehicles like trucks.

I back up my trailer all the time with the door open on my 2018 Ram 2500. I use my enclosed trailer to haul cars and when I store it at the storage place I have to park between other trailers. To keep from backing up too far and hitting the trailer behind me I open the door, stand on the step with my left foot while turned facing the trailer, and use the right foot for the accelerator. I do this because there is a mark on the ground that lines up with he left corner of my trailer letting me know I'm backed up to the right position.

OK., I have a 14 sport with the 8 speed, hemi, When I bought the truck new, it did not have the auto park, than I read about that actor, name?? getting killed because he did not have the knob in P.
It have happened to me a couple times, so Read the BOOK, I turned mine on with the program stuff on the radio. Also turned it off later to see if it would turn off and it did.

Maybe you are talking newer trucks, I did not notice, It will not go int park if the speed is faster than walk speed, forget 5km ? so no danger to transmission, thou it does slam in hard when I tried it , my post office boxed are on a hill, so that is where it get tested a couple times.

So get your manual out and read it, I forget what section it was in, as it has been a few years. I could pull the book out and check, but all the books should be the same.

BTW, I have never messed with the seat belt , so don't know about that part.

Thank you to those who provided solutions to the OP question and in addition the Chime Delete option.

This is a great place and I appreciate those who help with solutions.

There were 4 recalls on the sheet, I declined U07. However the autopark does function on my truck. So, it is added, even if it's not recorded.

Auto park does not work at higher speeds.

I could give to loads of cow manure whether someone gets hurt if they want drive with the door open, more concerned about the potential pointless damage to the truck.
Actually with auto-park on the truck works in your favor, just open the door and when you get out the truck will put itself in park saving you more time as your not having to shift into park. It's a win win..the door is safer and not having to shift to park is quicker than not closing the door. Plus not shifting into park only takes one hand to open the door.
So I should reinstall the doors on my old dodge? Screw that.
