I had to remove air filter box And I found this pipe damaged. Had the truck since new. Can not find out what the pipe is for. Was gonna replace if the damage is a problem. Have no clue how it happened especially since it is on top. Anyone know what pipe is?

Looks like pipes from the turbo.
Get that fixed.

@wef3rd it looks like you've listed a 2018 Cummins in your profile but you've posted in the 2nd Gen section. I'm going to move it over to 4th Gen Heavy Duty.

It is below the hose that connects to turbo. All I can come up with is turbo inlet tube. Thanks

airborne? surprised me. I thought it might control the amount of air flow.

I've seen it on Fords (Powerstrokes), GM (Duramax) & Caterpillar engines. Nothing new. Some dimple the intercooler pipes, some will have crush up-pipes pre-turbo and/or on the down pipe.

What would you think the reason would be?

Some are fitment, some like in the case of the Cat engine had nothing to do with fitment. The downpipe was pinched in an open area. For whatever reason the manufacturer wanted the exhaust restriction. I'm not going to begin to guess why. And it was on all 4 cab & chassis trucks that we got that year so we know it was intentional.

Thanks for everyone’s input. I was fixing to replace it until I found out what it was for and looked up the cost of a new one.
