2014 1500. My parents were driving my truck back from out of town when the "service power steering" message came on the dash and the steering got hard the steering wheel buttons still work just a stiff wheel. once I got the truck back the only thing that shows is the service power steering Light just flashes every time I turn the truck on. I checked the fuses on the battery and both look good, checked the ground wires and everything looks good, checked and cleaned out the dirt build up around the module connectors, I still have yet to open the cover (don't know if I need to ) checked the fuses in the fuse box and their still good. I've noticed it works more when the weather is cooler ( I live in South TX by RGV). I don't know if that also matters. So I don't know what the issue could be if anyone could help. TIA

So, it's not working at all? Or, it's working intermittently?

If it just suddenly stopped working altogether, there's a good chance that it is the belt. If so, it's a pretty easy fix, as detailed here:

If you end up needing to replace it, PN 68628858AA is the newest iteration, as far as I know and fits all of the 2013 and up trucks, including th 2019+ "Ram Classics". You can pretty much ignore all of the sites that say it won't fit your 2014. It is what I installed in my 2013 Sport back in march when my EPS **** the bed.

I got mine from Mopar Parts Giant, here. It was plug and play, no programming required. It worked perfectly right out of the box.

Go get a shot of whiskey before you look at the price!

You could try pulling the mainboard from the EPS and looking it over for a bad solder joint or something easy, but unless you get lucky with that, you'll probably just havin to buy a replacement.

When I replaced mine, I stripped the old one apart to try and figure out if it was repairable. It was pretty clear early on that the thing wasn't intended to be serviceable.

Your choices are, used on eBay/Junkyard or New OEM Mopar. Each has it's respective ups and downs.

The re-man units from the likes of AutoZone and O'Reilly's, have been so long discontinued/out of stock that we'll probably have evolved into another species before they're available again.

Yeah, my EPS just started doing this. The first time I scanned mine to get the error codes, it's started working but it won't stay working once I shut down and restart. I've been able to wake it up a couple times but it won't stick. Yours sounds more like a connection issue. I really wish I could be certain my problem is the EPS rack before shelling out $2k to test it.

My EPS unit has stopped working all together (at 139k miles). It was doing the intermittent low speed failure thing for about 4 months and then I was out on a short trip, started it back up to return home and it was completely dead (red steering wheel icon on the dash). So I have been shopping for the EPS rack replacement options out there. I definitely want to avoid remanufactured units. Does anyone have any experience with the Dorman unit? Is it good quality? Or should I spend the extra $ for the Mopar part?

Quite a few on this forum have tried it. I have not heard of a single one that actually worked.

Yet.

Much appreciated... I think I'll spend the extra $ and go with the Mopar rack.

Sorry, typo in the previous post was corrected.

I meant that I have NOT heard of a single aftermarket EPS unit actually working. Yet.

Good call going OEM. The most recent revision of the part is 68628858AA. That's the one to get.

Just had mine replaced on my 2016 bighorn, covered by lifetime warranty. If I was buying a rack, I would check with Benny at mopar parts. A forum vender. I believe there is a forum discount.

Have you investigated bad wiring or corroded connectors?
There are many threads on refurbishing EPS problems.

For the easy approach, PM Benny @AllMoparParts.com with your VIN.

Yeah, I have checked the power, fuses, connectors, etc... I haven't opened up the EPS to look at the board or the belt.

I have seen several EPS where the wiring harness was damaged inside the unit. Or, the PCB suffered from water ingress, damaging the wire interface.

Fingers crossed for you that you might find something that can be repaired.

If you don't mind the spend, its all good. Just expensive!

The general thought by many (not all) is you already have a used truck, and every part on it is used. If you buy the new steering that will be the only new part on the truck, so from that point of view it's a bit inconsistent with the rest. But then you do get piece of mind. And that can be worth a lot.

Yeah, peace of mind is right. If there's one key part to have *newer* on his truck it's the not-so-trusty EPS of those mid-teen years. If the new Mopar EPS comes with a lifetime warranty that would be great. If it doesn't ...ask if one can be purchased.

A lot of guys have looked up/down and all around on their EPS units, and really ...I've only heard of one guy who found a worn belt. Usually it seems like it's the board, or possibly the motor/wiring...or some internal sensor ...or something else. Yer probably smarter to just fork out the $$ and git-er-dun and move on. Hopefully you'll get many more good miles from your pickup. One good thing is they come with new tie rod ends...so you'll get them as part of the EPS install.

Just a quick follow up to this... I PM'd Benny @AllMoparParts.com with my VIN. Got the new mopar rack (and yes, the new tie rod ends were included which is nice). Installed it myself with no issues (by far the biggest pain is access to the 13mm bolt connecting the unit to the steering shaft). Having a second set of hands helps a lot too. Did not have to do any calibration. Got the truck aligned by a local shop and back on the road. Thanks to everyone for their inputs; all super helpful...

Excellent news and thanks for the update.

I think you made a good choice, and I hope you receive many more years of enjoyment with your truck.
