We are travelling in Arizona in the new 1500 Hemi. We have 4k miles on it and planning two trips puling a travel trailer before going home to Washington state. My thinking is that I should change the oil before the 5k mark so thinking about having it done now along with tire rotation, so no worries.

Go ahead and change the oil, use a full synthetic. Then don't worry about changing the oil for at least 7500 miles unless you idle the engine a lot (hours at a time).

Recommend changing oil on any Hemi every 5,000 miles due to the weak lubrication system for the lifters and camshaft. Owner evidence has compiled over the years showing the oil system is intolerant of contaminants that reduce flow rates in an already low flow oiling system. Avoiding idling whenever possible is also helpful.

A member went so far as to custom rebuild his engine to open up oil feed to the lifter and cam areas. See Synthetic Oil Thread.

It's either in the Synthetic Oil thread or one of the cam failure threads. I couldn't believe the expense the guy was going through to fix his engine after his camshaft failed. Just to do the cam and lifters is $4,500.

Cam and lifters failed on my 2015 last month. Dealer wanted $5700 and my shop down the street wanted $5300. I am now driving a new 2021, switched to 3.92 gears so that the engine is revving higher, will do synthetic oil this time, and drive it harder (service manager's recommendation). I used to drive like an old man. I'll now drive it like I drove in my 20s & 30s!
