We took one day to travel from Charleston SC to Sanibel Fl, about 500 miles and took a scenic route that a friend recommended instead of the interstates. We arrived after dark and the RV Park office was closed. Since it was a gated park we had to spend the night in the parking lot but at least they had power hook ups. Driving through small towns sounded good at first but quickly wore on my nerves. Lesson learned...500 miles is too far in one day unless it’s unavoidable...and towing through small towns should be avoided unless you are stopping there for some reason.
We also came to the conclusion that the first day of travel should be around 200 miles. This permits a late departure and early arrival so we can relax after the stress of getting ready to go. The days of “gotta get there” with the kids has been replaced with a much more leisurely pace.

Scotty Kilmer hates almost everything. I have just about 120k on my '14 Laramie. So far only regular maintenance. Runs great. Rides great. Looks great. No mods. Tow a 5k TT with it. Grade my mile long gravel road with it. Removed wrinkled tape on door posts. Love this truck. Everybody who rides in it loves it. I'm sure I'll be aggravated by something sooner or later, but that comes with all vehicles. They are not an investment, they are a liability. My only complaint has to do with U-Connect GPS. Gotta be something, right?

Planning this trip across country with an HQ15 behind my 1500QCSB 4x4 ... what is the width and length of your TT, was hoping to stay off highways as much as possible, will see how that goes.

Woodbooger I totally agree with your comment about the GPS. I wish I had taken pictures of some of the “over the river and through the woods” I literally drove up in the New England states when after the fact I found it was totally unnecessary. Even selecting the fastest route it would take us through residential streets when all we had to do was to go to the next major intersection and turn left and end up at the same place driving on major streets instead of zigzagging through residential streets. We now compare routes with Google maps before venturing off.

Enforcer17, we pull a Lance 2295 TT. It has a 22’ floor plan but measures 27’ hitch ball to rear bumper, and 8’ wide.
We plan on doing Route 66 next year and I would like to go through many of the original small towns. But as I said before unless there is something to see or do in a small town I prefer to avoid them when towing because many of the “Main Streets “ don’t lend themselves to wide turns when there is traffic.
Just my opinion.

I dont ever use a route with my gps unless I am going to some specific address somewhere off the main highway that I cant just look at on a map beforehand and remember how to get to. I mostly use it as a moving map to show my upcoming exits or highway changes after I do a little trip planning before starting out.

Visited a bunch of Route 66 in Arizona, the little town of Oatman is worth a visit, but for sure don’t bring the trailer! Very narrow and twisty road into town, in fact I couldn’t image making the drive 80 years ago, especially in the heat of the summer. There is a large number of burros wondering around town. They are descendants from the original mining operation animals, and while not domesticated they will come up to you for food.

Winslow was interesting, and would like to spend more time in Flagstaff. The Meteor crater was amazing, even if the entrance fee was absurd.

I am looking at buying a horse trailer to haul my horse from FL to CA for the summer - virus permitting. I am being encouraged by all horse people I know to install a 5th wheel in my 1500 with the 5.7 V8 hemi eTorque so I can go with a gooseneck verses a bumper pull. Does anyone have experience with this and also know whether it would void any warranties?

Not sure why you’d need a fifth wheel for a single or even a two horse trailer. Seems like an overkill. What size trailer are you looking to buy?

No need for a 5th wheel or gooseneck to pull a small horse trailer.... I've pulled 4 horses all over the southern Appalachian mountains (TN, NC, VA) using the typical under the bumper hitch with no trouble at all.... and with far less capable trucks (1979 Chevy).

Now if you're talking horse trailers with living quarters in them then maybe.
