I have a 2006 hemi sport 5.7 and want to throw on some new headers. I was wondering whether or not my current Y-pipe would be defeating the purpose of putting headers on. I don't mind going full duals if it will make a difference performance wise. My only issue is that my ram is lowered a couple inches and the Y-pipe fits well. I don't know too much about mid pipes. Any help would be awesome. thanks.

If you are going with shorties, then I would "fix" your stock y-pipe. Me personally, I would go with a set of Pacesetter longtubes along with their 3" y-pipe. It is mandrel bent and slips right onto the Pacesetter collectors. Better performance, easy install, and its reasonably priced. The pacesetter longtubes are only $299 for painted or $429 for ceramic coated, and the Y-pipe is only $185. Thats not bad at all when you consider the gains you will see with them over the shorties.

Would that give better performance than true duals?

I dont see a need for true duals unless you plan to add ported heads and a bigger cam. Going with a well made Y-pipe is just as effecting and will move plenty of air for a truck with the basic bolton upgrades.

When I installed this setup on my 03 hemi, I gained 35hp/41tq from the headers and Superchips. I did not dyno them separate, so I cant tell you the exact power I saw from the headers alone. Reguardless, that is a substantial increase in power, and you will feel that power across the entire rpm band.

You dont need custom tuning, but it does help to have some form of tuner. Back when I was real heavy into racing my 03, we didnt even have custom tuning as an option at the time. I was able to get my truck in the low 13's with basic boltons, a mild 6.1 cam, and a canned Superchips tuner. So while custom tuning will help you pull every last HP out of the motor, its not a necessity to run longtubes.
