Hey y'all.

My truck is a '17 5.7L with 90,000km (55,000miles) and I've used nothing but Redline 5w20 every 5,000km since brand new. I highly doubt I have lifter issues this early.

Either I'm going crazy, or there is a noise at idle that seems like it wasn't there before.

Take a listen.

I agree with JWS, it sounds great! I don't hear anything out of the ordinary so keep doing what you're doing. I think Redline is doing a fantastic job keeping that valve-train quiet.

Hey guys, here's another video while I give it some revs. Something still seems off to me. It's a mixture of some exhaust noise and some clackity clacks.

I'm visiting the dealership this Friday, but figured I'd keep this thread updated.

Sounds just like mine. Don't think there is an issue, but who knows.

I'd also say it's just fine. Dealer is 100% going to say that.

I'm not a mechanic, but that sounds a bit noisy but not noisy enough to be an issue. Just keep and eye on it. Perhaps do a oil analysis on your next oil change to see if you have any elevated wear metals.

Obviously a video doesn’t give the same experience as being there but that sounds fine to me.

On the second acceleration, and you let it idle down, I heard that tinny tick, other than that It sounds good, Hemi Honey is Redline 5w30w and Lube Gard Bio tech 15 oz, try that and see if that noise goes away, be patient it takes 2,3000 miles for the Moly to coat the engine parts. and do a oil analysis so you can check for higher levels of different metals.

A little update here.

So the last two oil changes I decided to run Redline 5w30, and I've mostly noticed the noise at idle/just off idle. Last night I drained out the oil and added 6 quarts/litres of Redline 5w20 and left the filter on which still has some leftover 5w30 in it of course.

This morning the truck is 75%, if not 80% quieter and doesn't seem to have as much noise.

Very weird considering most guys tell you to switch to 5w30

As far as I can tell motor oil is basically a religious topic and everyone seems to have their own personal relationship with it, hard to come to any kind of agreement or offer any kind of advice. Just a strange quirk of humanity that this topic would have so many interpretations and widely varying subjective experiences.

Do not use apple juice or whale boogers as lubricant in your engine.

There has been a lot of movement on the just run 5w30 redline thing that started with justin and cold piston slap. There has been an evolution as guys have tried many things and fine tuned their strategy. Even though that formula likely has the best success rate, it doesn't mean that is the perfect formula for any truck, especially in cold places, we have found out other formulas actually fight the tick better. We have found out that 0w30 has been proven to be a better tick killer (in some trucks) when we are in cold climates. I agree if you are worried to do an oil analysis, but I also agree with all the folks that say it doesn't sound like much of an issue with the recordings you have provided.

Since you still believe there is an issue but 5w20 is better then 5w30 in your truck, I'd consider 0w30. We have guys that had some tick on 5w20 redline and cold slap with 5w30 redline figure out that 0w30 redline was the best formula for their engines, @Hemi395 being leading the way on this. And he has tried many brands as well, all of them sounded like sewing machines except for the redline's, of which 0w30 seams to be the best. I don't think you much of an issue, but why not fine tune your strategy a bit, it has paid off for other guys especially in cold climates. 0w30 redline will have more cushioning at operating temp but also flow much better then their 5w30.

You never tried any other oil brand? You could always run some random oil and consider it a flush if it doesn't work out. The cheap brands of oil are not lacking any quality like the once did. Dexos specs really helped them, look for dexos. Kirkland oil is a hell of a play and very cheap, and in fact there have been a truck or two on the forum that did better with a different oil then redline, I believe those were PUP or PP can't really remember, but it is cheap to try new things if you are unsatisfied. Worst case the engine sounds louder and then you just go back to redline.

Just to rule out exhaust, check the exhaust manifold heat shield bolts for broken bolts. Grab the shield & see if it moves.

Honestly bro, i wouldn't worry about it. Stay away from oil threads and lifter issues. You'll be fine. You don't need anything special per se. If whatever oil you were using before did good for you stick to it. Hemis are not exactly quiet engines, and they're not the only ones with noisy valvetrains. You'll know if you have an issue for sure. other than that enjoy your truck.

Have fun.

But mixed together they would probably have the best viscosity right?

A little update as I don't like coming across threads with no conclusions.

Dealer said it's "normal"

My friend who works at Ram across the country also said it's "normal". He mentioned they had one customer who had the engine rebuilt, the noise returned in 3-4 days, then the whole longblock was replaced and the noise returned again in 3-4 days.

Unless it's a heavy metallic tick, apparently there is nothing to worry about.

Very soon I'll be switching to a 6.7L 2500, but until then I don't want my truck blowing up so I figured I'd update this.

TL;DR: NORMAL.
