So, this post is for the "Ram Cares" Member(s) on here.

I recently purchased an OEM limited slip differential for My 2015 Ram Express.

I contacted the two nearest Dodge dealerships around here for prices on installation, and these are the responses I got.

Dealership #1: We don't install LSD's per FCA guidelines. Something about "FCA won't allow us to install new differentials"...

Dealership #2: Will install the differential, but will not warranty the work.

I don't understand how any Dodge dealership won't install, or warranty a FACTORY OEM part on My Ram.

All the other work that I have had done on My Ram by the dealership (Factory remote start, Mirrors with blinkers and puddle lamps, door handles) they simply added the parts to My vin# and now they are warrantied.

So....what gives?

What gives?... Some dealers are sticklers for "as the vehicle is built" & don't give a damn otherwise. It seems that without a little research (on either part), they can get away with it.

As far as I see it, if a customer were to bring me an OE diff & all necessary bearings, the least I could do is look into them being able to warranty it later on & make that potential process as seamless as possible. OE parts should be considered OE parts regardless of configuration as long as it's still in the same gen.

To me, if they won't warranty at least the work they do, if not the part, then they won't be working on my truck....period.

I'm with this. What I would do is just looks up the nearest 5 dealerships and call and check. If not it's time to find a reputable axle builder and just get it done and they should warranty all there own work.

The issue may be that the dealer may not be able to get reimbursement from FCA for claims on equipment that was not installed as original equipment of the vehicle so the dealer would be out for any costs if their technicians screwed up.

Most any mechanic won't warranty work when you don't buy the parts from them. Pretty sure that's normal or at least not unusual. Also, I don't know why you think you can just slap on a limited slip months or years after-the-fact and have FCA warranty it. The shop doing the work might warranty their work, if you were to buy the part from them. But they're not going to warranty work when you just bring in a part, "OEM" or not. In my experience that's normal but maybe some independent shops are more flexible.

Just seems your expectations are out of whack.

No doubt there are lots of cases where you can tell the problem is with the WORK and not the PART. But sometimes it's not readily apparent what's defective, only that the repair itself failed. When both are warrantied there's no room for argument and no possibility of a PO'd customer. I understand why shops just take a hardline on this and say no warranty whatsoever. If you promise warranty for the work, then you're just going to end up in arguments and hurt feelings when you disagree about what was "defective" when the repair/replacement fails.

Thanks for Your support.....

Hey, sorry for the tone of the last post. Maybe I'm the one with the false expectations. Certainly wouldn't be the first time I'm wrong.

Was your other work done at time of purchase or later? Pretty cool if you can add OEM stuff at dealer after purchase and have it added to warranty. Normally, that's possible at time of sale only (at least that's my general understanding about industry practice).

Anyway, best of luck with getting this sorted out.

I don't see why a dealership won't warranty there work that to me is crazy. Not that they should add that part to the factory warranty I don't think they should do that at all. The oem limited slip should have a warranty from the manufacture for that part and the dealership should warranty there work. If the limited slip carrier fails the manufacture should replace that item not the labor (unfortunately you would have to take the hit on that) If the tech improperly intalls or setup of the differential the dealership should be on the hook for that. All in all the part should be warrantied by the manufacture of the part and the dealership should warranty there work l for at least 12 month 12k miles. That's my opnion and i don't think it's to far out there.

Whenever you buy Factory replacement parts thecome with the 12 months 12,000 mile warranty. I remember when I had them install my factory remote start they told me it was warranteed for one year. I bought the remote start online but it was a factory unit so it had the warranty. I have not heard of a dealership not warranting factory replacement parts. As others have suggested I would shop around a little at other dealers. Unfortunately for some reason in many cases different dealers will give you totally different information it is very frustrating and confusing. You can also have it installed by an outside Source specializing in differentials. They would probably do a better job but the problem you would run into is what has already been noted if you did have the failure the factory would blame it on the installer and the installer would blame it on the part. I would rather have it installed at a dealer that way if it's under warranty either way they're going to fix it. In all honesty if you have installed by someone who is qualified you most likely won't have any issues at all anyway. Good luck. I would shop around for dealers first. If you find one make sure they have a Technician who knows how to do it. The lash adjustment is critical for proper meshing of the ring and pinion.

I guess the question is where did you get the "factory" parts. If I was a dealer, I would only install and warranty parts that the dealer ordered. Obviously, its a money gimick because im sute they will charge you more for parts...but its their parts with chryler backing them. From the dealer end, Can't be sure where parts come from. But the dealer can track down who they get their parts from and hold them accountable for it.

But like others say, try different dealers. Each one seems to be on their own with the service aspect.

Sounds to me like they're only willing to warranty your small additions because it won't really cost them anything if it goes wrong. They won't warranty this big job because they're not willing to stand by their own work. Is this something you recently discovered that you really need? If not, maybe live with the setup you have and go for a limited slip differential on your next truck. Or bite the loss and trade up. That's of course providing that your efforts to get it done under warranty aren't successful.

I've got a pristine 2015, 8000 miles on it, with thousands of dollars in upgrades. If it comes down to it, I can easily afford to have the differential installed at a non Dodge facility. It's a matter of principle. Why won't Dodge install THEIR part, and warranty it?

Trade up....

Sooo, I went back to the dealership and talked to the service manager. He immediately took me back to the guy that ONLY DOES DIFFERENTIAL WORK!!

Told him what I had, and they quoted me 6 hours labor, and they will add it to the VIN so it is covered under warranty. No muss, No fuss.

Apparently the service writer that I spoke to earlier either a) doesn't know his f'in job or b) couldn't be bothered. I have an appointment next Monday to get it installed. The service manager is My new best friend.... :Big Laugh:

Glad they are taking care of you. I have run into many bad service writers at good dealerships, and they really leave a bad taste in your mouth when you consider buying another vehicle from that dealership or using them for any kind of service work.

Best advice is to find a service writer, or manager, that you can talk to easily, and they are usually more than willing to help out.
