there seems to be a lot of difference of opnion(of course) on why and why not to even use it.i have read a lot of discussions on this topic and the majority of users say stick with 1oil,a good 1 and use that for the life of the engine.change it and oil/air filters regularly to get the best longevity out of your engine.apparrently high mileage oils soften your seals and can lead to leaks and/or replacing of the seals.

I think with the 5.7 i'd just say move over the 30 weight at high mileage designation. Mainly due to wear on the rings.

Lots of articles you can google on pros/cons. The HM oils allegedly have extra additives that help to swell up dry seals and some have additives that can help "fill in" engine wear in cylinder walls and valve seats. My take?... (not that it's right or worth a hoot) is that if your engine is running like a champ with zero oil leaks, I'd stick with what you been doing up until now. That being said, if you are starting to burn a little oil, or have small oil leaks appearing, then I would definitely give it a shot. It's not that much more expensive and there is really no down side (except the little extra $$) to trying it. I used it in my Nissan Titan every third change just to keep the seals conditioned. In reality, my use of it was probably more to give me a warm and fuzzy, but hey whatever it takes. YMMV

So in a perfect world we would test our compression every 10k miles and know the number, when you start to loose compression and every engine will do so as it ages, move to thicker oil, you will get some of the compression back. Whether or not that is 75k miles is a completely different conversation. My thought is it would be a little longer, but no real experience to back that up, just a guess.

I would think in the era of 200000 + miles, significant loss of compression would occur much later.

My 1999 Dodge 5.9 Magnum started to eat synthetic oil at about 150k, running 5w30. Switched to 10w40 High Milage Conventional oil and it cut my oil consumption by 50%.
My gf little Honda with the 1.8 development oil leaks using synthetic oil at 133k, running 0w20. Switched to a High mileage synthetic blend in 5w20 and all the leaks slowly dried up.
There is a time in every engine life that will benefit from High mileage oils imo.
The full synthetic High mileage oils are not as affective imo. Those oil is what caused the oil leaks in my gf Honda.
The market is full of oil options, and conventional High mileage oils are a great tool when you need it.

Opinions are like Boobs, they come in twos, yours and mine.

My opinion of HM oil is that it is a way to make more money on the same product.
Nothing lasts forever. A leaking seal=fix it. Look at high mileage over the road trucks, do you think they change oil weight based on mileage? My answer is no, they run oil weights and types based upon the engine/manufacturer needs.

Yours, run what you want.

Another "boob" here. I have always looked at High Mileage oils as 50% marketing and 50% actually needed but with certain circumstances.

In my opinion, HM oils are only needed if one has picked up a unknown maintenance history vehicle or they have neglected the oil change maintenance on their vehicle since new.

If proper spec'd oil and oil change intervals have been used since new, the need for a high mileage oil is not there as detergency of regular oil should have done it's job. A vehicle that has been neglect or oil change intervals run beyond recommended intervals, then a HM oil may help but that is a band aid.

On a well maintained HM engine I see no need for a HM oil. However I would use a HM oil to address certain issues that might develope on HM engines, not as a preventative but as an attempted bandaid. I would deffinately use a HM oil rather than pour in additives

Valvoline & M1 formulate a very good quality/performing line of HM oils.
VOAs have shown both to have a very strong additive package - (Slightly more robust then their normal Lines). ---> Variables apply depending on the Viscosity!
Unless formulations have changed during the past 2-3 yrs.

Yes every owner has their own opinions/thoughts on these highly marketed oils.
I have mine and use them in certain situations.
I honestly feel they are NOT a waste of $$ due to in My region the HM oils are the same price as the normal Line of oils.
Getting a slightly Stouter/More Robust oil for the same price. :emotions122:
(Once again: Variables much apply depending on the Viscosity of the oils being compared)!

Maybe the only additives that are really not needed (All the Time) are the Seal Conditioners.
Now are these HM oils really & truly needed for your Well Maintained Daily Driver? I say not really but they will not cause in no way shape or form---> harm. (If Used either every OCI or every so often). Once Again Just my Humble Opinion and Thoughts :boobs:

Now with that all spewed out of my A$$!
Think about this!
Why don't you ever see a HM HD Diesel Oil?

Like stated many times: Every Owner has their Own Opinions & Thoughts.
Just like with Tires/Air Fresheners/Toilet Paper/Beer/Underwear/Socks/Chrome or Black!

EDIT: For your newer 5.7L/6.4L hemi-- your better off starting early with RL 5W-30 or PUP 0w-40 and keeping top notch maintenance.
Then there will be no need for the HM oils!

Oil, it is such an interesting topic. It reminds me of weather broadcasters, they can be wrong 50% of the time and still have a job.

If it works for you then, by all means, do it.

Good Luck

It would be interesting to select 50 members & pull them inside a room & tell them you think their oil brand & viscosity selection is wrong!
Just to see their first impression & then leave it at that.

I deeply enjoy searching out owners whom always think---> If other owners don't use what I use --->They are all Wrong!
That type is growing by leaps and bounds! Really Comical!

I have always thought Oil talk was very similar to Religion talk!
Some one always left seriously Butt Hurt!

M1 is even jumping on the band wagon now. M1 EP now comes in a HM oil too. Oh to go back to the good ol' days when our biggest choice was 20, 30, or 50wt.
