my 2012 Laramie Longhorn was due for an oil change for the first time since I bought it. I consulted my owners manual and saw 5w20 is the reocommended weight. Did the oil change amd was pouring the old oil into the original container and I noticed it said 0w20. Apparently I had grabbed the wrong weight.

Will it make much of a difference? I'm using Mobil 1 fuLl synthetic high mileage with a mobil 1 filter.

I doubt it will hurt much in the short run but I'd swap it out for the right stuff ASAP. I believe the only difference with the lower weight would be that it's thinner but I'm no oil guru so someone else correct me if I'm wrong.

The trend to lower viscosity oils is mainly driven by fuel efficiency and emissions. I would not worry.

I used the wrong oil, a thinner oil, many years ago in a 74 260Z. My father and others said don’t worry about it. The engine spun a crank bearing 2000 miles later. The engine needed a full rebuild, and of course my father said coincidence. Sure, at 62000 miles?

For 38 years now I’ve regretted the moment I bought that oil.

if your engine blows in the next few months, how are you going to feel about it?

We used to use 10W40 and 20W50 in our *** cars back in the day so I guess if you did the same and then put 30HD in there by mistake that's a much bigger difference. 2009-2012 seem to have the greatest number of cam/lifter failures so I can appreciate your concern. I would go ahead and change the oil pretty soon and switch over to Redline 5W30 for complete piece of mind.

If you do drain it out, try to keep it clean as it would make a fine winter oil, if only using it for light duty.
Honestly, if you aren't going to tow or run the truck hard this oil change, I wouldn't even worry about it.

The letter 'W' means both varieties are suitable for cold temperatures. ... So, 0W20 means the oil's viscosity is 0 in cold temperatures and 20 at the operating temperature. The 5W20 oil is the same except for a viscosity of 5 in cold temperatures. Both oils are designed to use in cold-weather regions.

My owners manual specifies 5W-20 or 0W-20 oil. Do I really need to use 5W-20 or 0W-20 oil and why did my 2000 model year vehicle require a 5W-30 oil, while the exact same engine in my 2001, 2002 and newer engines "requires" a 5W-20 or 0W-20 oil?

Answer: NO! You do not need to use a 5W-20 or 0W-20 oil. Do not let your dealer scare you by telling you that you have to use 5W-20 oil for your warranty. That is a tactic that some dealerships use to scare customers. Once you know the facts and the Federal Magnusson Moss Act law, you will be much better informed to protect your rights and use the type of fluids you want to use.

The main reason 5W-20 or 0W-20 oil was specified for your engine is to increase the CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) reported to the Federal Government. CAFE is the combined average fuel economy of all of a vehicle manufacturers product line. Minimum CAFE levels are specified by the Federal Government. In order for a vehicle manufacturer to continue selling profitable large trucks and SUV's, which typically have poor fuel mileage ratings, as compared to smaller cars, and still meet mandated CAFE requirements, they must also sell enough of the smaller cars which have much better fuel economy ratings to offset the poor fuel economy ratings of the larger vehicles. For model year 2001, the change to a 5W-20 oil will allow Honda and Ford's overall CAFE to increase by a very small amount, typically in the tenths of a mile per gallon range. 5W-20 oil is a lighter viscosity than a 5W-30 oil and therefore has less internal engine frictional losses, or less drag on the crankshaft, pistons and valvetrain, which in turn promotes increased fuel economy. This increased fuel economy is virtually undetectable to the average motorist without the use of specialized engine monitoring and testing equipment under strictly controlled test track driving when compared to a 5W-30, 10W-30 or a 0W-30 viscosity motor oil.

I use to drive Fiat 127 cars in Ireland when I was a teenager,We had a auto shop and the only oil I ever put in mine was the oil my father use to take of other cars after servicing them.Just constant top ups.Never had a problem with a motor but those cars all met their demise with a tree etc eventually lol.Wouldn't over think oil.

On my wife's mazda 3, using 0w-20 oil is good for almost 2 mpg over a 5w-30 oil, even over 1 mpg better than using 5w-20.

No you are fine. Going one way or the other on weight isn't going to hurt anything.

Doesn't using 5w30 in an engine with MDS cause it to not activate properly?

I had the same question as turboguard. Want to avoid premature lifter failure.

Like others have said with the valvetrain issues on the 5.7 I would get the best 5-20 and the Archoil additive,
