I have a 1997 Dodge Ram 2500 5.9 V8 I've been looking into programmers and I've came across very few for a 97, I saw Hypertech has a few different ones, I was thinking about getting the Hypertech Max Energy one. Does anybody know anything about this? Does it even work? Also I know they can cause the thermostat to stick open I have a Jet Performance High flow 180 degree thermostat will that work with this programmer?

Hypertech is a plastic piece of trash. Superchips is better but not by a whole lot. Best programmer is sct and that's because you can get custom tunes with it.

I haven't seen a Superchip or SCT for a 1997 they generally say 98-01. Would it work with a 97 sense it is OBD2?

Hi Aluminum,

Can't answer about the Max Energy, but I did put a Hypertech interceptor on my 13 and it did what they said it would. With it on I could break 'em loose from a stop on any surface. But it cost me over three miles per gallon to have it on and I just couldn't justify that to burn up a $1000 set of tires. I have no complaints about the thing and if the Max is built to the same standard it should do you good. But again you have to remember that these are two completely different animals.
Good luck and have fun,

I missed the party about it being a 97. I've seen conflicting things about superchips being compatible. I've seen it listed as working on 96+ trucks but also on their forum a guy asked about his 97 not taking it and they said they don't offer one for 97 and older.

I'd look into sct and see if that'll work

When I look at the SCT I only see Ford Gm and Chrysler, Is it not vehicle specific? The SCT confuses me on what it does and how it works. All I'm looking to do is reprogram my odometer for larger tires and different gears in the future, plus I'd like more power and better MPG. Does the SCT do that?

The sct does the same thing as a hypertech or superchips but allows custom tunes made for your specific setup to make your truck run as good as possible.
