I hate to ask another tick/oil question but....

I didnt want to start another thread but the oil/tick threads are massive now and I have a quick question...

I have a 2014 5.7 with 85k miles on it. on start up, I have a tick for 60 seconds. at first I thought it might be exhaust manifold and I only seem to hear it on the passenger side for under a minute. But the manifold leaks people say it ticks for 10+ minutes.

So Im guessing its a cold start tick on a lifter? I use penzoil UP 5-20 and have for years. Truck runs quiet after that first 30-60 seconds.

Ive read in 2 threads where people say the PUP oil works and is quiet, and another thread where people say it was the loudest. Oil on the shelf, doesnt have a moly rating that I can find on the bottles. Redline is at least 50% more expensive than PUP.

There are 4 different lucas oil stabilizers at my local Auto zone.

So, with only a 30-60 tick am I right to think its a lifter and oil based? Is PUP really fine and I should add a basic lucas stabilizer to it?

thanks,.

Get a socket and ratchet and check all the bolts to see if they are loose if any are they are more than likely broke, easy way to check.

If they are all tight I would do 5w30 with LubeGuard and see how that does.

Don't use Lucas. PUP of what Mopar puts in when new and what all the dealers use. It has plenty of moly in it.
The tick your hearing is on a cold start up... when the motor is off the oil drains past the lifters not getting much if any on them. The sound you hear is dry cam and lifters its a bad design in the hemi but not alot to worry about.

I would recommend that you use 5w30 PUP as it leaves a better coating on the parts in question.

What's wrong with Lucas? One of the big oil threads have multiple people adding it to the oil to help the tick.

My 2013 had a similar issue when I first bought it. It would “tick” for the first 10-15 seconds then go away. Come to find out, I had 2 broken exhaust studs. Dealer fixed them under warranty and never had a problem again.

Thanks everyone. More research on those bolts are needed...

I have the exhaust tick and it doesn't last very long. Reach in and see if the heat shield is loose and that should give you a good idea. The bolts are more likely to break in the back.

I put about a pint of that Lucas stabilizer in my hemi once and afterward at every startup it had noisy lifters pretty bad.I got home from work one night at 2 am and drained that crap out and put 5/30 back in and been quiet ever since.I never had a noisy engine before adding that Lucas,I just thought it would give it a bit more protection. My hemi loves me again.
