hey I have a 2016 Ram 1500 with the 5.7L Hemi and it makes this ticking sound when I start it after about 30 minutes of it sitting...

What could it be??

The dealership says the exhaust manifold studs are in good condition.....

I still have warranty but would like to guide the dealership in the right direction as my warranty runs out soon!

Manifold. Covered by 5yr/100kmi, so you've got time unless you are pushing high mileage. It will get worse in a few weeks to where the dealer can verify. Try a different dealer. Leave it with them over night, show up before they open and ask service manager and tech to walk with you out to your truck to start it.

Welcome to Ram forum, as you can tell there are two main causes in 99% of that tick, either exhaust bolts or lifters. They sound the same and as far as I can tell about evenly distributed 50/50 it is one or the other. So what has been proven best quieting the lifters is redline oil 5w30 paired with a royal purple filter part number 20-820 will fit don't bother 10-48, options for other filters are fram ultra. amsoil, or wix xp.

However, there is no other oil built like redline, motul would be the closest thing. Nick @gotexaust a vendor here also happens to be the cheapest place to get redline oil, somewhere around 12 bucks a qrt. It is also a long interval oil, so you can offset some of the cost by running it 10k miles. Now, if you try redline and there is no change in the sound whatsoever, you can likely rule out lifters. Sometimes it can take 500-1700 miles to totally quiet, it is the science behind the formula, it takes time, heat, and pressure for the oil to plate that area. Not just heat and pressure that comes along with having lifter tick, but also TIME.

Of course best move is contact dealer and make a stink, even try and bring it in multiple times if under warranty.

Wow that sounds really bad, definitely one of the worst startup noises I’ve ever heard. Definitely start documenting with videos and get it to the dealership to get it documented. But to be honest I wouldn’t expect them to do anything but it’s worth a try. If your running a 5w20 oil you need to switch over to a 5w30 With good Moly. Redline or Amsoil would be my first two choices. If you want an off the shelf oil QSUD would be my choice. 30 weight oil and warranty coverage might not go together, really comes down to the dealership. Some good most bad!
Either way you need to do something Fast!!!! If the dealership blows smoke make the switch to a 30 weight oil and a good quality oil filter.
How many miles on your rig? What is your oil change interval? What oil are you using now?

I haven’t changed the oil yet I bought it a few months ago. But I have Mobil 1 full synthetic 5w20 that I am going to be putting in it with a Mobil 1 oil filter.

My 2015 has this noise from time to time. I know it's been discussed here a bunch, but that noise happens for me if I start the truck, move it a short distance (like from my driveway to the street), turn it off then start it again after sitting for a bit.

Mine did it when I picked the truck up from the tire shop. My guess is that they moved it from their bay to the parking lot, similar to the situation described above. My noise only last a second or two then it's all quiet. 59K mi on my hemi so far.

I have to say it's manifold studs. I'm on my 3rd set.

I might add if you are close to the end of the warranty purchase the Chrysler Max Care service agreement. You can find it on line just be sure it is Chrysler. I believe the life time has been discontinued but I still think it is worth the $ if you are going to keep the truck.

It makes no sense that you pay 40k to 50k or more for a vehicle and have to add specialized products to prevent that product from self destruction. On top of that they provide a fix or solution to the problem that should have prevented it from occurring to begin with. Don’t get wrong, I really like my ram, it drives, rides and looks great, but these problems are known to engineers. So damn, why not fix it. As a plus, this site doesn’t get the proverbial “I want to by a Ram but”.

You came from nowhere, where did you hear about this just RF? Thanks for the compliment an welcome to the forum. This is what Ram forum is about, people sharing info on how to make these machines better. If you haven't shared your story in synthetic oil thread ram forum please do and if you don't mind expand a little like did you try different things and/or how long it took to get the tick out of your truck. I do appreciate the confidence, but there are a great group of guys here and we all figured this stuff out together, and that scratches the surface, follow syn thread we seam to figure stuff out weekly over there that may benefit you.
