Have a 2015 Ram 1500 with the 5.7 L Hemi. Started it up Sunday and have a bad noise. It sounds like something is taping on the block somewhere. I have video. It's to large to upload. I've been told it's the dreaded lifter tick. What am I looking at to do this? I've seen some places where they say use the Hellcat lifters. I'm assuming the cam is probably gone also. At least one or 2 lobes are probably toast. What is some advice on doing this myself? How long did it take? How do I know if it's VVT and MDS or one of the other? I sure appreciate any and all help. And if you want to come down and help me do it I'd even be more appreciative.

yet another, sorry man.

dyi cam thread

If no p0300's there is a good chance there is no substantial cam damage. Use a lubrication strategy, redline 5w30 or lubegard biotech.

So something like Lucas or a higher weight oil? What oil is decent? I want to use synthetic but a decent brand. Amsoil any good?

Redline 5w30 is your best shot. Amsoil wont cure a tick. Dont use lucas it will make things worse. My friend did that with his 2015 and 4 days later it was time to tear it apart because the cam was toast

There are additives and base oils that ram forum members have proven to be helpful. Those mainly are esters that are polar by nature micro lubrication, and molybdenum. Either redline 5w30 or lubegard biotech added to whatever oil you want provide those proven methods. The best part of this strategy is their is no downside, like if you added lucas it would thicken the hell out of your oil, these strategies wont. Lucas is like cSt viscosity 110, which is over ten times as thick as manufacturer oil.

Anyhow, you don't want a thin layer of oil in a tick condition, because it will likely push most of it out and carbonize what's left. The entire reason it's ticking is there is not enough oil flow there, so oil is not the answer. You need additives, and/or base oils that interact with the metal while not degrading in the hot condition of metal out of tolerance, look at polyol esters the same type in redline, at least 100f more tempature before it degrades.

I am sorry to hear this. I know this has a been kicked around so much. Redline and lubetech bioguard seem to be the way to go. This was my brief tick story. Used mobil 1 and a wix filter. Noticed the tick almost instantly. Got to reading and learned of the tick. At the time there wasn't a lot of knowledge at the time. So I ran a can of seafoam through the engine. I drove it 100 miles and dumped it. I added Castrol EDGE and a Puraltor boss filter. Since then and this was 5 years ago. I have never heard it tick again. I just added bioguard to mine for insurance. It was starting to start a little rough. It is now smooth as a brand new engine. I would really listen to Burla. He knows a lot.

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond. I don't get any notifications that I've received any. So, this redline and biotech are additives to the oil I use or oil? I was going to trade the truck in on a new one but I love my truck. This breaks my heart. I know I'm going to have to tear into the engine. The tick is getting worse. My buddy mechanic listened to it today and confirmed it. No codes yet. But it is stumbling and hesitating at idle when the tick happens. I really don't want to tear into this motor. The time it will take is what concerns me. Thanks for the help. I really appreciate any and all of it.

Here it is. You can hear this slight tink, or tick every so often. When I get close to the firewall is when it can be heard the best. And passenger side. Phone pics up a lot of noise bit, you can hear it.

So do I use Redline and lube guard or whatever oil I want plus lube guard?
Yes, that is correct. You will have the best chance of quieting things down with the RedLine 5W/30 which is what I put in all of my customers trucks.

I listened to both vids with headphones, normally I suggest recording from underneath engine, but in this case not needed. The cadence is off what hemi tick is, not saying it isn't hemi tick, just that it isnt constant hemi tick we usually hear. You would use either redline 5w30, or lubegard in any synthetic oil you want, usually not together without further instruction. Generally redline is more successful at tick on ram forum. In this case, I'm not sure if it will help or not, if I was you I would want to pull the heads and check the valves. If you haven't got any codes, it wouldn't hurt much more by trying a lubrication strategy to see if it helps, but this may or may not be sticky lifters.

If you choose RedLine do not add Lubeguard. Use RedLine 5W30 and a good oil filter like Royal Purple 20-820. There are others like Fram ultra XG2 (I think, i know they are discussed on this forum regularly) that will also work.
Has anyone listened to the video? It doesn't sound like other hemi ticks to me it's a really random clunk sort of noise. The motor sounds great other than that.

Edit my bad Burla we posted at like the same time lol. Yeah this doesn't sound like typical lifter tick but I don't have any other insight.

Increasing the rpm's helps with diagnosis, closer to the engine the better and I'm hearing a tick randomly not constant, possibly Redline and Biotech will help and a good Royal Purple
20-820 oil filter, Burla's right the cadence is off.

Yeah the video sucks. I'll try to get one under the truck. It's making a sound like a click and it's not in any cadence. My engine actually has a small erratic idle when it does it. I recently changed my spark plugs. Could they be causing this.
