Is a Cam phaser limiter a must?

Hi everyone,
I was wondering if when doing a Preformance cam, is the phaser limiter a must or an option? I’m thinking of going with the Comp Cam 112-501-11 with everything else that can be replaced along with the cam. Just wondering about the phaser limiter.
Thanks!

That cam probably shouldn't be used in your truck Lyle,as it looks like it's for the earlier non-vvt engines, you need a vvt cam.
If the cam you select says it needs a modified phaser limiter, you need to mod your stock limiter, otherwise you'll have piston to valve clearance issues. The phaser actually advances and ******* the cam in relation to the crank,so the majority of the bigger cams either limit the amount of travel the limiter can provide or completely lock it out to keep the valves from smacking the pistons.
Check out the difference in the end of the cam where the top sprocket aka the phaser bolts onto, on this cam to the cam you're looking at.The holes and grooves in the VVT cam supply oil to the phaser so it can be either advanced or retarded, while the cam you're looking at,doesn't have any of that.
Personally I wouldn't go with the cam I posted it's to big to be a nice daily driver truck cam,i just used it for the picture to show the differences in the cam you're looking at,to what you actually should be looking at,as far as the VVT goes

Hey thanks for the info. I just contacted summit racing and asked for a good cam for my truck and provided all the trucks info. This is what they provided to me. Now, with the cam you posted, is there certain parts that will have to be changed for this cam, or can I still purchase the items that was put together by summit racing for the other cam they selected?
Thanks.

Don't pick the cam I posted,it's to big for a daily driver truck,i just used it for illustration purposes.I have no clue of what Summit picked for you as far as springs/pushrods/lifters etc. ,but it appears like Summit doesn't know much if they spec'd a non-vvt cam for your truck.Go with one of the reputable hemi cam suppliers ,like Matt Fikac (Moes) Jay Greene or TSP(Texas Speed) and we've got another cam guru in the mix Brian Tooley Racing is apparently doing Hemi cams now to.Even Ma Mopar has performance cams for the 5.7,check them out also.Sounds to me like you've ran into sticker shock and are trying to do a cheap cam swap, not a good idea, lol. It cost me close to 4G Canuck to do a Greene cam properly in my truck, that included ARP head bolts, new high performance valve springs and Hellcat lifters from Mopar,Trend pushrods ,gaskets/fluids etc. It's not cheap to do a cam in a hemi in Canada

Would this cam work as well as it has Phaser Engines?View attachment 193594

Link doesn't work,i just see a pic, nothing else.I'd personally go with somebody who does a whole cam kit, that way, you're getting matched components, mickey mousing a cam package together, has a good chance of coming back to haunt you,and costing you more money in the long run,ask Tuned Laramie about his 6.4 cam swap,if you haven't followed his head-ache thread, lol

IMHO you'll have a better outcome if you buy from one of the forums vendors or one of the people Wild one was talking about. Support after the purchase is really important I think and after Summit recommended the wrong cam I'd be a little leary of ordering anything from someone that was just an "order taker" and someone that clearly has no first-hand experience with our trucks. Moe's is a preferred vendor on this forum and has cam kits that are specifically made for your truck and Matt has the knowledge and experience to answer all your questions.

This is all good info as I’ll be the first to say I know nothing about swapping cams and are looking around for one. Thanks guys and I’ll have to get in touch with Matt at Moes as I was looking on his site. Always cost more for everything up here in Canada. I appreciate the honesty and straight forward no BS! I’m just preparing for the cam to go, it’s not gone yet, but I know it’s coming.
Cheers!

Lyle I hope you're not expecting a cam upgrade to turn it into a "wow I can't handle all this new found power syndrome" as you might be a little disappointed.A cam will generate some more power, but it might not generate as much as you are expecting for the money spent. As long as you go into the cam swap with the idea of it creating a bit more power, but not set you back in the seat and peel the eyelids off your eyeballs type increase, you won't be disappointed. I got a buddy who just did a cam on his lifted 6sp 4X4 2015,and he's now ******** about the money he spent for the power return,i tried to warn him,not to expect a big increase, but he'd been listening to the facebook guru's,and is now sorely disappointed, for the return on his dollar, and I seem to get to hear about it,lol.

Yep, agree... It is nice when paired with some other upgrades ie headers and some intake tweaks, but unless you go wild (and it makes the driveability challenging) it's not a massive power change.

Any power gain would be awesome. But as far as me looking for that “wow factor”, I wouldn’t know. I feel power as it is now with LT headers, true dual, CIA, and custom tune from HF. I just dropped 8100 on a transmission so the 4 G’s would definitely have to wait for brighter financial days lol.

But yeah I’ll leaning towards Moes when the time comes as I been checking out his site.
Thanks again!

Sounds like you're on the right track now. It will be a great upgrade and even better to do it right the first time and not have to get back in there and do it all over again.

Matt will help you every step of the way and very knowledgeable!
