Don't want to spend the money right now on a K&N FIPK, but was thinking about just simply replacing the paper air filter with a K&N filter. Does anyone run a K&N filter with the stock air box and how efficient is the stock air box?

Is there a way to mate a open air filter (cone style) to the factory snorkel, i'm sure someone on here has tired it, just and idea.

You wont gain anything by just replacing the filter unless your current filter is just dirty...the oiled filters are nice though because they are reusable. I would just toss another factory filter in there and start saving up for a real intake system. The S&B kits are just under $300, so that's not bad.

If you want to rig your current airbox to get more air, you can always drill a hole in the bottom of the box and run a piece of flex hose from the box to the front bumper. This will get more air to the filter, but without a better flowing box and intake tube, I wouldnt expect to feel much of a gain from this.

A stock airbox will be better than using an open element where it allows it to suck hot air from inside the engine compartment. If you want to save some money, you can drill a hole in the stock box, attach a flange and get some flexible tubing and run a line down to behind the bumper where cool air can be had. You just have to be careful if fording rivers... ;)

I like the K&N after the install. Picked up some MPG, maybe not power but it runs better. Passengers have commented without knowing I changed anything.
