Guys so I lost my key phob last night and had a few questions. So I go to my truck and it unlocks when I press the button on the door is that normal? But when I try to crank it it says key phob not detected. So does that mean the phob is near enough to the truck to unlock but not start? Also if it is completely lost, what are my options for a new one? Can the dealership look up the vin without getting it towed?

First WELCOME to the forum. Bummer you lost the key FOB. Hopefully you can find it, BUT I believe the dealer can make a new FOB for you. I would say in the $200/$300 range :O I am not sure they will do it with just your VIN they may need your truck so expect it to be towed ! They may have to since it with the trucks computer . Hopefully people with experience chime in with better help ! Please UPDATE us in what you have to do so it can help someone else if needed ! Thanks

Yeah, if you can unlock the door it was nearby.

If the doors unlock when pushing the button on the handle, I'm guessing your key fob is in the vehicle somewhere. Check between and under the seats, check the back seat too.
If you do need to get a new fob, I think it needs to go-to the dealer as it needs to be "paired" with the truck.

Do you have keyless enter n go (push button start)? If you do, and you can walk to the door handle and grasp the inside of the handle (this unlocks the doors, pushing the button on the door handle locks the doors), and it unlocks without you having the fob, then something is wrong. UNLESS...the fob is possibly laying right there on the ground somewhere? If it’s laying on the ground close enough, you can unlock the doors and get in, but the ignition won’t detect the fob because it’s too far away.

I lost my fobs in the truck. They fell out my pocket, under the seat and followed the wires under the carpet. Now I have 3 sets of keys. My truck acted like yours with a key inside. I had my new key made by a locksmith. I was $218 for key and programming. IDK if they can do it without a key.

A new fob can be programmed without any other functioning fobs (with the right tools). If I were the OP, I’d be looking around the ground for that fob, or possibly under the driver seat next to the doors. That’s the only logical explanation that the doors can be unlocked by grabbing the handle.

The fob is near the truck or it wouldn't unlock. If it was inside it would start. Start searching.

He could always get the AlphaOBD and the MX OBD connect for about $120 and program the FOB himself.

My doorhandle will not unlock the truck when you touch it unless you are 5 feet or less from it. I just tested it on my 2015 Laramie. Just go find the key fob it's there somewhere or the door would not unlock.

Found it guys. Turns out the night I lost it I had a few too many drinks and my buddy needed to borrow a jacket that was in my truck so I gave him the phob and I told him to put it in my gas tank. No recollection of our conversation. Thank you all haha!

I was going to say, if it is locking/unlocking the fob is not inside the truck. This is a safety issue, if it would do that with the fob in the cab, then anybody could walk up to you on the street and open your door at an intersection.

I agree with Rado definitely get a spare made.

I thought they need one key to make a spare, otherwise it's very expensive if everything is lost?

My key is the style that looks like a USB and has a real key inside of it. Insert and turn, no button.

I had the dealer make an extra for $305 but they also programed my cheap ones I bought online for free. So at least I have a few keys now for the price of one. I matched the fcc id when ordering online

If you are still under warranty the dealer will replace a lost fob for free. If I remember right you can replace them until you reach 600.00 worth.

Look on the bright side, your drinking only caused you to misplace your fob for 24 hrs. Some guys end up paying child support for 18+ years due to one night of too much drinking!
