Hey guys maybe yall can answer my question. I have a 2016 ram 1500 5.7 with mds and a week ago I thought i heard a noise but wasn't sure and just yesterday really listening to it it sounds like a knock but inconsistent in a way. I don't think it is pistons but maybe someone can give me some pointers before she goes to the dealer Monday. The truck has 205k miles as well and I did take off the belt and the noise still persists.

Is there any difference in the sound between a cold start and full operating temp?

Does it get quieter or stay the same?

When my lifter/cam went south I had a similar rhythmic sound but more tappy and metallic.

A little different then traditional hemi tick, I don't have any good idea on this one other then I hear it. My best guess is a sticky lifter, but I'm 50% on that guess at best. I'd change the oil with redline 5w30 and a puro boss filter 24651 verify that number puro fitament just to see if this combo effects the cadence at all. The worst sticky lifter is if this happens at warm idle, then you have an issue with either lubrication or lash.

That's not internal, sounds like something is loose externally.

Exactly. If it were internal it would be steady and consitent.

Something for the tool box to get is an automotive stethescope. Can greatly help pinpoint the source of the noise.
