Large system install, worth changing head unit?

If you ever make a trip to Tampa, I would be willing to help. Seriously though you are making the right choice, I have seen many people "try" their own install only to gouge dashes, burn up BCMs, rip parts, etc. You need proper tools and experience for a job like that. I figure time is a factor as well. I could get the Ram down to nothing in two hours - where it may take someone else two days. Time is money, and I know what I'm worth. If it's a cheaper rate than what my time is worth, I'll pay someone else to do it (anything in general, not just car audio)

I get it. And I agree mostly. My personality has always been if someone built it, I can unbuild it. It has cost me in the past as you can probably guess. In the end it mostly has been not to do that again. So i definitely see your point. Regardless of which way you go with this, you are going to end up with something great!

BTW where are you planning to mount the DSP?
On the amp rack being the back seats. Have 3 amps, the dsp, and the distribution blocks all to go there. As well as RAM lettering if it fits and looks good.

That's exactly along the lines I'm thinking. Not to mention ripped or broken leather and headliner. Clips I didn't know was there and yank off. Broken glass trying to deaden the doors. Seems I could do some damage quickly while trying to "do it better".

Just for reference, here’s a picture of my back wall with 4 amps and a DSP. All the amps are fairly large. I suck at photography so the one on the left is cut off halfway.

Was that the finished product? I was thinking (for the first time, ******** me) after answering the dsp question if all 3 amps would fit behind the seat.

Yes, that’s the final install. We had pulled the rear seat to do some troubleshooting.

I think the back wall is probably the logical choice. I was thinking under the passenger seat might be a good option as well just in case I need to get to it.

When exactly are you scheduled for this install ?

I'm not. It was originally for today, but that's before I felt like I maybe got a bit taken advantage of, and before I started pondering a head unit. However if you look at my original post, I have been waiting a long time for this. And with now having a system in my girls car, I'm really anxious to get it in.

I first posted on August 5th, and had probably researched about a month or so before that at least, probably longer. So about 6 months or so since I decided I wanted to put a system in. And now everything is in my living room/kitchen ready to be loaded and taken somewhere. Almost everything. Having some custom heat shrink coming, 1/0 amp inputs, and going to go ahead and buy seat spacers and a table harness rather than trusting whoever to build/use them.

I’m not going with a system in my Ram, but I will be adding this head unit to it this week.

Man, what a damn headache. Had it all setup and ready to drop off in the morning for installation. The dude emails me today saying it can no longer be done due to management, scheduling conflicts, time requirements, etc. I'm damn near ready to say screw it and just have it thrown in by anybody just so I can finally have the damn thing installed. Anyone local with some passion for their work wanna make some money? Haha.

Looks pretty nice. In my current situation I'm more concerned with getting what I've already bought simply installed. Have thousands ******* in it already, and been sitting around my house for months teasing me.

I would highly suggest having what’s owned installed, tuned, and then seeing if you actually want to step up. I’ve found no point in adding something if you truly do not know if it brings anything to the table.

So I was talked into the Kenwood 9904s. Supposedly just came out. Flac files and all that good stuff. Matched ebay pricing for me. Guess we will see. Losing an inch or so in screen size.

I went from an 8.4 RA3 with a DSP to a DMX7704S. While you will not get to hear the difference as you are not installed yet, the difference is well worth it nor will you miss that extra inch of screen.

No offense but since you are not familiar with tuning and installation, a HU like you are buying is a much friendlier and flexible solution over tuning a DSP. I don’t know if you are keeping the DSP in the mix, I would recommend not, even if it means running passive in a 2 or 3 way setup. You'll be surprised how good your system will sound as these new HUs take in account of vehicle size and speaker placement.

That’s a good radio to work with from what I am hearing.

Yea I'm sticking with the dsp, everything had already been bought. It is all being professionally installed tho.
