Well...had some nice 70 degree weather so I tackled the 3rd brake light mod...my truck had a tremendous amount of dirt around my light and was sealed against the truck pretty well...when I pulled away and disconnected was nice and clean inside....gasket was drying out and getting really brittle....it was also fairly thin...it was really glued onto the light and took me a good 30 mins to really clean and remove old gasket...had a thin layer of glue that once you heat up a bit you can rub off with your fingers. I then cleaned with goof off and then prepped with alcohol. I then installed the new gasket material which is very good quality. I also cleaned outside housing around truck with alcohol and then reinstalled the light. Take your time installing screws back as the gasket is thicker..be sure to balance the turns of screws on right and left to equal pressure...I will go back in a few days and retorq a bit one gasket forms a bit. Another great mod to be aware of as I am sure within a couple more years I would have had a leak as well....a lot of pollen, dirt, **** builds up in this spot as I was surprised. I am glad that it was addressed and new gasket warranted to 10 years...I also have enough left to do it again. I plan on keeping this vechicle and giving to my 6 year old son when he is ready to drive...be a great 1st vechicle for a young man!:happy107:

Does anyone know if they've changed the gasket on the newer models? I have a 2018 and I'd like to know if this is something I need to be on the lookout for in the future.

Thanks

I did this mod to my 2017 when it was new before it leaked, I doubt your 2018 is any different

I would guess you're right. I'll have to take a look and stop this before it happens....thanks!

I did this on a 2017 for a buddy of mine (his was fresh, mine was hardened). I agree with above, it is very unlikely that they changed the design for 2018.

The cab roof has changed in 19....it looks like the seal is different as well.

This stuff...
Black Extreme Temperature Auto & Marine EPDM Weatherstrip by MD Building 01033

5/16" thick, 19/32" wide.

My Wife drove my truck Sunday and called me Sunday night to tell me there was a light layer of mold on the seats. (I'm in the DC area and my Wife and my truck are in Florida.) I just ordered this product and will be installing it over the Labor Day weekend. Always something!

I'm just wondering if I put my own gasket on and then I get a leak with that if it will void the warranty. I think I may monitor it closely after we start getting rain and at the first sign of leakage take it to the dealer and demand that THEY fix it.

It wont leak if you do the fix... There just isn't a way for it to get in.

I knocked my 2016 out today - as others have stated gasket appeared in good shape but was a pain to clean off, it just disintegrated as I removed it, lots of scraping and cleanup time. Putting on the new 1033 gasket material was quick and easy though once I got it all cleaned up. It's definitely thicker, which makes the light appear to stick out a bit more than before, especially in the middle area away from the screws. But, it's the same material everyone else is using so I expect it will work fine.

Thanks to this thread, today I went ahead and did this to my ‘18 I bought in June. Gasket looked good but also didn’t want to take a chance on others misfortune of a wet headliner and more later on.

It won’t work on CHMSL - at least not on my 2018. I used silicone and sealed around the edges to avoid a future issue.

Well you see the gasket they put on versus the thick water proof one they should have put on. Super easy fix, and if Ram had the right one on in the first place my cab wouldn't smell like mold and I wouldn't be out the 300 dollars worth of stuff the water damaged.[/QU
Good old engineering .That is how you fix things great job
