Most the posts here are speculation and opinion. I haven't seen anyone ask about what's in the paperwork? Did you drop off the lease truck and sign for your new one without getting a final word on your lease termination? If so, that is probably a mistake. Lessons hard learned. It sounds like you at least got $250 off.

We all have opinions about how the world "should" work and want to believe what some money grubbing salesman TELLS us. All that and a token gets you on the subway. Read the fine print everyone!!

This is a valuable discussion for the future. In the end, I would take from this the obvious in that I will be more diligent next time. Also it clearly paid to inquire and request. $250 was worth it.

I did, so let me break it down for you since you dont understand what you wrote.. first you said the salesman said "you SHOULD be fine" so I'm guessing you dont understand that, "SHOULD" is not a positive answer. 2nd you said they said was If I stuck with a chrysler I was going to be alright and they "USUALLY DONT" bill for minor things, now once again "USUALLY DONT" sure as hell isnt telling me that they are not going to bill me but they could, have to understand what they are telling you before get your panties in a bundle. Understanding what they are telling you is key here. so because you didnt get a written statement of the damage or statement saying YOU WONT BE CHARGED( cause you know thats a positive sign them telling you in writing i wont get a bill) you get all pissy when they send you a bill
Again 88Rook this dealership had a positive history with me as well as the salesman and with that earned a certain amount of trust. The actual conversation with the dealer was also a bit more extensive and over the course of 2 separate meetings on 2 different dates. I wouldn’t say you are incorrect either in the acquisition of a “positive sign”, but as a member of this forum and a Ram owner calling me an idiot was strange. If you are going to treat other Ram owners like that maybe you should drive a Ford.

With any lease vehicle at turn-in always complete a vehicle inspection report. If turning in early most dealers will say they don’t do them, the creditor or Chrysler will take care of it when they pick it up.
NEVER LEAVE A VEHICLE OR SIGN PAPERS FOR NEW ONE UNLESS THE CONDITION OF THE VEHICLE IS NOTED WITH DEALERSHIP PAPERWORK AND YOU TAKE A COPY.

Good luck with the new truck @Pezrock. Have fun!

I guess I got lucky the one time I turned in a leased vehicle.

It was a 2012 Subaru Legacy. I turned it in 9 months early, over mileage, needing brakes and with well worn snow tires on it.

I had my eye on a new 2014 XV Crosstrek base model with 5spd MT they had on the lot sitting for a while. I got ahold of the sales guy I leased the Legacy from and said I'll buy that Crosstrek today if you get me out of my lease free and clear and ONLY if I'm free and clear with it.

They did. I got nothing in writing in terms of the lease turn in. No condition report, etc. Drove off with the new Crosstrek and never got a bill or anything for the leased Legacy.

I don't think I'll ever lease again, but if I did, I'd want something in writing in terms of the lease turn-in condition. I think the whole process varies from make/make. You gotta figure FCA would be one of the shadier ones.

I loved my pos ford 91 escort wagon. Got it with 100k on it for a 1000 bucks and put almost 200 more on it. Lol

I think they must have lost your contact info :) :)

Kidding aside, it sounds like you got the one honest salesman on the planet who lived by his word that you bought a new vehicle and were out of your lease. I'm sure his career in auto sales was short lived.

Some honest sales people do extremely well as they have repeat customers
my salesman gave me a better deal than the lowball dealers 300 km away in Vancouver that poach on other dealers that are out of town
He does not work hard and mostly writes up repeats with good deals
his profit per is lower but does more than most

It honestly had nothing to do with my sales person. The way my local mega chain dealers work is, your sales person is just there to keep you moving through their process. All the decision making has to go though the sales manager or management. The sales manager did hem and haw with my situation, but they let it happen anyway. Like I say, I'd never do this again w/out something in writing to the effect I owe nothing on the lease turn-in.

FCA has nothing to do with the lease turn in process. And you can get an inspection done prior to turning it in so that you know what you’re getting into, no surprises. In your example post, they traded you out of the car, they didn’t turn it in, so you’ll never get a letter from the leasing company in that example, they never get the car back.

I hear you, but they all claim they have nothing to do with the lease turn-in process. It all depends on the specific deal and how badly they want your business. The dealer management knows exactly how to deal with whomever the vehicle is leased through.

In the case of my 2012 Subaru Legacy, I never saw it online in their dealer inventory. No idea where it went.

It's a whole 'nother situation if you plan to just turn a leased vehicle in and walk away. Of course they're going to nickle and dime you. If you're turning a leased vehicle in for another lease or purchase, you are foolish for not leveraging the (no cost to you) turn in towards the new lease or purchase.

I do this every 30 months or so with my 77yr/old FIL who insists on leasing Nissan Rogues. He turns them in early and under mileage with normal wear and tear, possibly needing brakes and tires at the time of turn in. He's never had to pay a dime. The dealer handles the whole thing.
