From reading all the info on exhaust upgrades it seems most of you are doing it by choice. Has anyone run a stock exhaust system on a Hemi long enough to plug up the cat or get the "rotten egg" smell? My last truck was a diesel and I never did anything with the stock exhaust but remember with past gassers things get plugged up after a while.

I'm not much into mods (too many kids and too much work taking my time and $$ :)) but plan to do a cat-back system when needed just so I don't lose anything off the stock performance. I'm thinking around 60K miles? But that's just a guess from past vehicles.

Thanks for any advice :favorites13:

Brother's '05 is still running stock exhaust; no leaks, holes or any other issue for that matter. He's sitting at 245,000kms IIRC.

Newer car exhaust can a last a long time. Not sure how well in a snowy or salt air climate though.

Just buy a stainless muffler you want. You don't have to do the tailpipe there fine. I like the sound of flowmaster and did a 50 hd and it bolts right on.

I plan on replacing mine with stainless only after the winter road treatments have taken their toll. On the flip side if you went stainless now there are many folks that will buy the stock parts in good condition.

I didnt have any of the problems you listed but on my stock exhaust one of the welds cracked right before the Resonator on the passenger side and it ended up breaking off and falling off so i had to replace it but i was only at like 40k miles.

If you are running OEM, you already have stainless.

Unclear on the exact mileage, but in the US, the EPA requires the manufacturer to Warranty the emissions system for ~~~80k~~~~ miles, or something to that effect.

That's probably why they come with stainless exhaust systems as OEM now.
Really? I thought it was something else? Don't they rust? I thought that's why Magnaflows were so shiny compared to stock, and why they came with a lifetime replacement warranty (because they're stainless)?

Honest questions, not being a smart ***...

Not all stainless is equal, Magnaflow usually uses 409 or 304 stainless. The 304 has a higher mickle content.. Honestly there are somewheres aroun 5-10 metals that's make up stainless and the mixture controls the quality. There are low quality stainless's that rust and even will hold a magnet but are still stainless.

Most exhaust systems will last along time depending on location every year the quailty of emmisions systems and cats ect get better and will last longer so it's hard to say. Newer engines produce less and less emissions witch will make your cats last longer and longer.

All 409 grade stainless.

Maggys that shine are polished 409,,, (The also sell non-polished 409)

Welds may develop surface rust, but its not 'what you would think',,,

Rust/oxidation is an electro-chemical process,,,

We use 410 grade stainless in our self-drilling stainless fasteners. (I believe its 305 in our self tapping stainless,,, but that grade is too hard/brittle to put a drill tip on it, so we use 410 for the driller applications.)

Over time, (many years), exposed to the elements, 410 will actually develop a 'cap' of ~kinda looks like rust~ over the head of the fastener. Unlike carbide steel fasteners, that rust actually protects / 'caps over' the rest of the stainless, protecting it from further corrosion. In that state, it will last a looooooooooooooong, long time,,, 305 will not 'cap' over,,, It stays pretty much like it was the day you installed it, at least, in our roof systems it does)

Carbide steel (used in our other 'value-orientated' self drilling fasteners,) when exposed to the elements, will 'red rust', and that rust process will continue until the fastener is consumed.

'Aluminized steel" is what the 'value orientated' exhaust systems are made of. They will ~red~ rust / rot out in a matter of a few years, depending on your conditions.

But, yes, your OEM exhaust is stainless. :)

Thank you both for the info...I was basing my upgrade on 2 previous mufflers that rusted out on my 99 RAM Sport and assumed (incorrectly) that they were made of something other than stainless.

Maybe this will move up the timeframe for my planned upgrade?
