I got 10k on my Hemi. I already hear a tick on her, hear it Lou's ar start up. Weather been - 15 plus. I am know to idle so I will stop that more than I can. I do Idle to warm it up. I run Mopar synthetic since 5k before that was regular Mopar. Is my truck Ok?I'm a Chrysler master tech (Level 3 in all areas) also a ford senior master and ASE Master tech with L1 and L2 certs. I do at least 1 Hemi a week for lifter failure on oilfield trucks.mileage isn't the killer its engine hours. Because of the extreme angle on the push rods and the way the engine is lubricated. (push rods get lubed last) idling the engine causes low oil volume, therefore lifter failure. just run good oil and don't idle it and you will never have another failure.
I think the tick is just a characteristic of the hemi. There are plenty of hemis out there with a ton of miles on them that tick but run fine. My buddy has a 300c with about 95k on it and it ticks but runs fine.I got 10k on my Hemi. I already hear a tick on her, hear it Lou's ar start up. Weather been - 15 plus. Hmm who would of thought hemi like Dino oil. So should I just go back to the basic oil? Same on my 3.6lv6?I think the tick is just a characteristic of the hemi. The Mopar oil is essentially Pennzoil conventional and Mopar synthetic I believe is Penzzoil Platinum. I ran Platinum for about 5k and it started ticking like crazy. Switched back to Pennzoil Conventional and it quieted it right up so that's what I've been running since. Pennzoil conventional has a much higher moly count than Platinum. No idea why but it does and hemis love moly.

Moly is short for Molybdenum. Its an antiwear additive in most motor oils. How it works is it forms a sacrificial coating on the metal parts that helps prevent wear. What's moly?
If Mopar synthetic is indeed Pennzoil Platinum, then yes it has 60 ppm of moly. And this is exactly why I switched back to Pennzoil conventional. As for the cold weather, any 5w20 conventional or synthetic should be OK as long as its not -30 or something. Thats when a good 0w20 would be best.I run Mopar synthetic apparently only has a 60 molly? I might switch back to conventional Mopar oil has way higher molly. But this synthetic does seem to help in this very cold weather were having.
Ya we have hit over-30c which puts it at a weird area. So next oil change I'm going back. Mopar synthetic is Pennzoil platinum. How much moly is in Pennzoil ultra? If Mopar synthetic is indeed Pennzoil Platinum, then yes it has 60 ppm of moly. And this is exactly why I switched back to Pennzoil conventional. I started mine up the other day when it was 0 out and I had no lifter noise at startup with Pennzoil Conventional.
Sorry I'm talking about -30F... Ultra is around the same as Platinum if I remember correctly.Ya we have hit over-30c which puts it at a weird area. So next oil change I'm going back. Mopar synthetic is Pennzoil platinum. How much moly is in Pennzoil ultra?
Thanks Mate. Pennzoil needs to add more molly to its synthetic.Sorry I'm talking about -30F... Ultra is around the same as Platinum if I remember correctly.
Yessir they do! I'm not sure why they don't! Their synthetics are fantastic oils they just don't have much of the one additive that Hemi's need. Thanks Mate. Pennzoil needs to add more molly to its synthetic.
