I have a double jet ski trailer in NYC area. So i donator all that often. Probably total weight of at most 2000lbs. The one I'm looking at has 3.92 gears.Admittedly, I don't know anything about gears, and would like to know if it is not only appropriate for this purpose but is it the right choice for everyday driving.
Thanks

My 14 Sport and 19 Laramie were/are 3:21 and I was specific about that number when I bought the 19. I've hauled the largest double axle U-haul trailer a couple of times over 700 miles fully loaded with the 14 and hardly knew it was back there. My driving is generally rural and highway so I like the lower RPM's i.e. Fuel Economy.

If you prefer the 3:92 cause your **** says it's faster or like the idea of possibly hauling larger loads with it then go for it.

I'd rather have the higher highway mileage but this discussion is usually like politics and religion, a lot of folks feel quite strongly about their choice.

BTW, we're talking may be 1-2 mpg difference so it's not the end of the world either way.

Nailed it! Yup, if you want max towing or more torque off the line, go with the 3:92. If you want a little better mileage and only tow light loads, go for the 3:21. I have the 3:92 on my Limited, and it's a great daily driver, although, I wouldn't mind a little better highway mileage!

you wouldnt need 3.92 gears for the towing you are going to do. you would be fine with 3.55 or 3.21. if your driving when not towing is mostly on the highway, go for the higher gears...3.21 or 3.55 but the mileage will only be a cpl. mpg different. the trucks have very low first gears so all rear ends will probably get about the same mileage in town driving. I have the 3.92 and get over 21 mpg on the highway occasionally.

I honestly don’t know how it affects the truck that’s why I asked others in the know. The truck I’m looking at is already built with the 3.92 but needed clarity if there was a reason to avoid it.

The mileage difference won't be great between a 3.21 and 3.92 gear set and the taller gears are nice for towing.

One day you may end with something to tow that weighs more so having those torque multiplier gear sets is a good thing.

Pulling a jet ski trailer would not need 3.92 gears. However, if the truck you are looking has everything you want and has the 3.92 It wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.

The 3:21 will tach around 1750 rpm at 70 while the 3:92 will tach around 1950 rpm. You can get the exact mileage if you slow down a taste. In the end it’s about 1 mile per gallon.

Go with the 3.92, you never know what you will want to tow later and then kick yourself in the butt for not getting it. The 3.92 gear will allow 3000+lbs more towing capacity compared with the 3.21....

I regret not getting a 2500, i bought my 1500 to tow my travel trailer not long ago, shortly after, we are now looking at a larger trailer that my truck will probably not support.

Something else to throw in the mix, if you do more city driving vs long high speed runs on the freeway you'll usually get better fuel economy with the 3.92 gearing. The lower gearing is easier for the truck to get going from a stop. What widens the fuel economy gap between 3.21 vs 3.92 is if you drive 80+ on the freeway. Like stated before the usually difference between the two gearing is 1-2 mpgs, you'll see more of a mileage loss driving into the wind.
