This works with the 6 speed but I don't believe it works with the 8. It does not work with mine anyway. Not sure what the OP has in his 2016.
I stand corrected, crazy ram took that out! So Ram says guys with 8 speed when towing, it's ok for MDS to kick in. Wow = cr@p.

it's best to use TH and the manual shift, at least take it down to 7 to keep mds off.
That is exactly how I tow. Just a 2 place, enclosed sled trailer. Something heavy and I'd take it down to 6 but for me it's not about the MDS. It's to limit the shifting from 8 to 7 to 8 which is constant towing at 65.

FWIW, OP, my truck has just shy of 180k miles ...and to my knowledge (and all service records I could find) the lifters haven't been touched. There have been plenty of high-miler pickup guys on this forum who haven't had lifter issues.

But I get your concern. Maybe throw on a high volume oil pump which would be easier. Run really good oil, obviously. But changing the lifers to new (or at least checking yours) can't hurt, obviously.

If you feel it in your bones, maybe your truck is telling you something...

The high volumn pumps just lighten your wallet ,take more horsepower to turn / create more oil heat, and don't do squat to promote lifter or cam life. There is "No" pressurized oil fed to the cam lobes or lifter rollers, they are strictly oiled by crank splash. Even Re-ignited Cycle the guy that created that myth about the Hellcat or high volumn Melling pump admits he's not sure it does anything, but he's managed to create a myth that has sucked alot of people into spending money on a pump that has more disadvantages then it has advantages

Ok so catching up with comments: I have 2016 1500 Rebel 5.7 8 gear. My wife is using my truck atm and she's just going to and from work (16 mile round trip) so she doesn't care about going faster or upping rpm much. I bought the truck back in March of this year, it had 116k miles on it, I've only put 1.5-2k miles on it, hauled only small things as I live in an apartment as it is. Wanted to get ahead of issues before they start, no ticking nothing strange with the truck since buying it.

Your best bet is timely maintenance, and NOT a 7,500 or 10K OCI, (5000 OCI), using good synthetic oil and synthetic filter.

ADDED: This is my opinion, if U do not get 5K in a year, than change oil yearly. U might wanna check and see if any fluids have been changed: ie., radiator, front-rear diff, tranny, transfer case (if 4 X 4). U are definitely in the range for those services. But do as yer wallet dictates.

Hopefully you were able to get maintenance records when you bought your truck.

Doesn't engaging tow/haul disable the mds all by itself?

Could be misremembering, it's been 4 years since I switched to 3500s.

Dependent upon what transmission you have,

I have a 2023 with the ETorque. When I start the engine, I put it in drive, I do the paddle thing turning the MDS off and I use Amsoil 5w30. I figure that’s the least expensive route for not having (hopefully) a major failure.

I've learned the MDS has had many issues with that engine like lifter and cam issues
MDS is not the cause of cam/lifter failures. Poor oiling, excessive idling, and poor heat treating of parts is, IMO.

My 2015 had cam/lifter failure at 201k miles, #5 intake lifter, plus BOTH #8 cam lobes had wear just through the heat-treat on the lobe ends.

Guess what? #5 and #8 are NON-MDS cylinders.

You've learned misinformation.

If MDS causes the issue, why do non-MDS lifters fail at the same rate?

*edited for a typo that was bothering me*

Have you tested that theory?

During my Spring cleaning, I've managed somewhere between 5500 & 6000 rpm, and the tranny didn't switch before I tapped the '+' button.

.
I've tried it and mine won't upshift out if held in manual gear. you'll hit the rev limiter.

I use the gear limiter buttons on the steering wheel to shut off the mds bs. Its free but you just have to remember to do it everytime you put it in drive. I also dont idle the truck for extended periods of time and I use 5-30 motor oil.

My 2014 has 247895 on it never been touched . Change the oil at 6500 5/30 mobile serviced the transmission at 50000 intervals. My wife drives it mostly always telling me it's her truck. She drives it like she stole it always. I prefer my 71 power wagon w 200 440
