Well I have a 14 Ram 1500 crewcab 4x4 with the 8 speed auto
3:21 gears and a open rear diff.
I plan on racing this truck and wanting to be able to 60' without having to run it in 4 wheel drive.
Mods so far are;
Lowered 2/3 Ground Force kit
Jay Greene tuned with Diablo Intune DCX
170 degree Thermostat
clutch fan delete
mufflex muffler delete
S&B CAI
Mods planned are;
Aftermarket LSD
Wet nitrous kit.

I need to get this truck to hook up, it spins so easy being a one tire fire.
So any insight would be much appreciated.

Thanks. Bill

Confused.... how do you have a 4x4 and an open rear diff? 4x4 only engages the front transfer case... nothing changes in the rear... so you only have 3x4? Makes no sense. Unless I'm mistaken.

4x4 with an open rear is really a 4x2. One rear wheel has power, put in 4x4 it sends power to one front wheel.

In 2 wheel drive your truck send 50% of the power to each rear wheel until the traction limit of 1 of the tires is reached at which point ~100% (not quite, but nearly) of the power goes to the wheel that had less traction. In 4 wheel drive something similar happens, the truck sends 25% of the power to each wheel until there is enough torque in the power-train to overcome the available traction in one front tire, and one rear tire. Since the transfer case is locked 50% of the power still goes to the front, and 50% to the back (for all practical intents, and purposes), thus you have one tire spinning in the front receiving ~50% of the engine power, and one tire spinning in the back receiving the remainder.

This is why people complain about not having limited slip diffs which help balance power distribution across an axle that has a traction difference between the two tires.

So why would they call call it a 4x4? lol…

This got me thinking… I went to parts and checked my VIN and they said it has 3.92… the sales guy said he thought it had 3.21 which is why I went to the service people. The truck didn't have a build sheet or anything in it. about a month later I was under the truck and noticed the sticker on the rear driver axle tube… sure enough I had 3.55s… so both service and the sales guy were wrong. I then posted on here about this and uploaded a pic of my rear sticker. I also emailed Mopar and got my build sheet sent to me, which states I have 3.55s so I believe the build sheet.

Now my issue is that it shows NOTHING about LSD on the build sheet. Ive done some searches on my rear sticker and another guy had posted a pic of his and its all the same minus one number (and his was a 3.92). I can't find any info about it on the net yet.

What I can say thats related to the drivetrain on my build sheet is…

Electronic shift on the fly
215mm front axle
235mm rear axle
Conventional diff front axle
Conventional diff rear axle
Four wheel drive (4WD)/(4x4)
6 Spd Auto 65RFE transmission
3.55 Rear axle ratio

Thats All I got.

Heres my rear sticker.

I thought the 4x4 meant it had to have posi in the rear but I guess dodge would really give you a 4x2 but call it a 4x4. I can't lift the back of the truck up and spin the tires… NJ is getting a massive snow storm right now. I thought perhaps the AD in the code meant Antispin Diff… Sorry to the OP figured it would help you also if we learned how to decode the rear Diff sticker.

If the build sheet doesn't say anything about it, you probably don't have it. Chrysler calls it Anti-spin on their build sheets. That AD is simply the part version number. Every time a part changes they change those last 2 letters (AA, AB, AC etc..)

There is no such thing as a true 4X4 ram 1500... best you can buy is a 4X3 (rear LSD and front open). I'm not certain but I'm not sure any truck comes factory with a front LSD anymore. My old 99 was a true 4X4 (with 2 LSDs) and we basically had to do front u-joints with every oil change. It binds the front end like crazy around turns. Thats why they always used to warn so heavily against 4X4 on dry roads.

aint that a *****…

Got this off another ram site… this is for the 13-14 RAM 1500 models. Makes sense if you change the last 2 every year.

So reading the sticky thread that was posted in the first reply the factory LSD seems to be pretty good and cheaper than the Auburn LSD.
I guess I will be calling the dealer soon to get a quote on putting the Factory LSD in.
Unless someone else has an opinion on a better option for about the same money?
I am not doing anything with my gears they will stay 3:21's as it would cost to much to change front and rear gears and install a rear LSD at the same time.
Thanks for the replies an information.

If the dealership tries to charge you list price on the OEM LSD, we have them in stock for only $599 shipped. List on that unit is $774.

Ok sounds great, I was at the dealership earlier today and they are working on a total price for me. So what else will I need other than the OEM LSD?
Thanks, Bill

You need the LSD and a master install kit. Getting these parts from a dealership is going to run you close to $1000 before labor. They are very greedy when buying direct from a dealership.

They said they would match your price of $599 for the LSD and said that I would need two more things like bearings kits or something for both sides. I mentioned the master install kit but they wern't to sure what that was. They asked me if I had a part number for it. So if it is a Mopar install kit can you share the part number? Then Diff oil, additive and charge me 5 hours labor. Price came to $1460ish all said and done.
Does that sound about right? Hopefully the Master install kit is cheaper that the other parts they priced out that they think I need and if you get me a part number that might save me a little more.
Only good thing (for me anyway) they said by me buying the parts off them and with them doing the install that they would be updating my Vin number of my truck as a dealer installed option and it then would fall under my powertrain warrenty..
Thanks for all your help. I will be pulling the trigger on this next week so I look forward to getting rid of this open rear diff..
