Made it to the track today to test the 8sp with our new custom grind cam. First and only pass was a 12.57 @ 108.51mph....and then it threw the driveshaft right after I crossed the traps.

I will be working on a fix for this Monday so that we can see how much more this truck has in it.

What was the prep? Sucks to see you throw the shaft like that.

Spare tire and swaybar. Still had full interior, tailgate, and tow hitch. Ran through the muffler and just a normal Vararam intake. Have a lot left on the table. I really wouldnt be surprised if this truck goes 11.9 n/a.

Using the Diablo tuner? I hear it's the best bang for the buck

How are you liking the 3.92 gears with the 8 speed?

I love my 3.92's and 8 speed... They worked great before plugging in the Diablo. Now, it doesn't run and I'm stuck waiting till Monday for customer service. Best bang for the buck ever!!

I have only had this truck for a week, so havent put many miles on it yet. I do own a 2015 crew cab 4wd 8sp with 3.92's that I've had for about a year now, and I love it.

Why would this happen? Does your blue truck have a stock diveshaft?

How much can the stock drive shafts typically take (doing hard launches on slicks)?

Nice run btw!

Any damage result from the flying shaft? Threw it due to the drop kit most likely?

The muffler got beat up a little, but everything else is good. Was able to find a new one in stock at a local dealership, so I was able to fix it at the track and drive back home.

It's a known problem at higher speeds with the 8sp regular cab trucks. It's an aluminum 2 piece driveshaft, and they fail at the joint.

The blue truck has a stock steel 1 piece driveshaft, so I have never had a problem with it.

Crap.... I have an 8 speed RCSB. Though I don't drag race my truck either though. So I doubt any hard highway pulls bone stock would have the same effect.

Would you eventually run the same steel driveshaft on this truck? Or just continue to run the stock 2 piece and keep your fingers crossed?

I'm going to call The Driveshaft Shop tomorrow about making an upgraded 2pc driveshaft for us.

Very impressive Matt , sucks about the shaft though. Great run nonetheless!!! High 11's would be pretty awesome for Ram truck with no F/I. Good luck.

Driveshaft Safe Operating RPM Calculator | Spicer Parts

this might help you out and I may just go and check mine to see where the numbers end up for fun.

Back when I had a high HP truck I took my stock driveshaft and had it re-balanced at a local shop because many times they are not perfect from the factory. It took everything I could throw at it.

Unfortunately the longer the driveshaft, the lower the critical speed......

some info:

Balance
Anytime you increase the power output of a stock engine and subsequently increase the speed at which the engine operates, you need to look at driveshaft balance. Most factory driveshafts are balanced between 3,000 and 3,500 rpm. Spinning the driveshaft past that range can have a parasitic effect. Steve Raymond from DynoTech Engineering tells us, “We have had several NASCAR teams tell us our driveshaft saves them 3 to 7 hp at the wheels of their race cars. That’s why balance and design are important and why we manufacture shafts for about 85 to 90 percent of the NASCAR teams.”

DynoTech Engineering uses Balance Engineering driveshaft balancers, which are considered the best in balancing accuracy. DynoTech suggests balancing a performance driveshaft at a minimum of 5,000 rpm and as high as 7,500 rpm. This ensures a properly tuned driveshaft that reduces vibration and efficiently transmits power to the wheels.

Length And Diameter
Other than balance, the length and diameter of the driveshaft directly affect the performance of the unit. Critical speed is the rpm at which the driveshaft becomes unstable and begins to bend into an S shape. The longer and smaller (diameter) a driveshaft is, the lower its critical speed. Critical speed is felt as excessive vibration that could cause the unit to fail. To calculate the critical speed, the length, diameter, wall thickness, and material module of elasticity must be known. Then using the critical speed calculation formula, the numbers are plugged in and you will know the driveshaft’s critical speed.

Maybe nobody else is going to say it, but I will. I am a little disappointed. I was hoping to see much faster. You got l lot of work (well maybe not a lot of work, but certainly a lot of go fast goodies) to be cutting that king of '60 and only a 12.57. Maybe I just expect too much. What's the weight of the truck?

Considering he put everything back together the night before without any testing before the track and had little to no track prep I'd say this truck has a lot more left in it and patience is a virtue. Quicker times are coming.
