Guys
It's most likely the lead free solder that is prevalent in today's industry.
Over time - and hot/cold cycles - the lead free solder will "break up" and really the only way to fix it is to "reflow" it or remove all the old gunk and put good stuff in it.
Also, vibration will exacerbate these cracks.
To "reflow" it you will need to remove the entire cluster and inspect the solder points for cracks. If there are cracks you will need to use a solder gun to basically heat the solder up again so it "reforms" if you will.
Be advised, this is a temporary fix. Could last a long time or.... ?
How do I know all of this?
2 weeks after buying my used '06 it happened to me.
I googled the hell outta it and it came to the lead free solder.
Which, makes sense. Most countries are requiring lead free solder to be used now for the environment - where does lead come from again? ah, but it can't go back?
I had to "reflow" my old ps3 several times till it finally wouldn't work anymore.
Also, had to do the same thing to my big projection TV.
*EDIT*
Forget to add that to fix mine I bought a Diablo Sport Trinity Tuner and after loading the Hemi Fever tunes I use the DS for a tach.
There are several options available. Tach alone, tach/speedo, coolant temp, AT fluid temp, spark advance, etc etc
Good stuff there. Plus it sets you up for future mods.
My tach comes to life every now & then.
It's awesome when it does. I really miss a live needle. Not the dead one buried on the post stop thing. :/
