Alright guys, as you know I have been all over the place about either keeping my truck or getting into something else. I'm looking for 5.9 cummins. I'm looking to sell my Ram for 32k. Its fully loaded with 27k miles.

My question, am I better off keeping my ram or buying a cummins. Just convince me. Lol.

And if anyone wants to buy my Truck or knows someone PM me. Lol. Mine is a 2010 so it is tunable. Lol.

I'll tell you how it's beneficial to me and why I got one...

1.) I do a lot of highway driving
2.) MPG's
3.) My other truck would perform horribly and heat up under a moderate load.
4.) I LOVE power...and that's one thing these trucks are packing.
5.) Has a defense mechanism. When ********** are on my bumper, give them the pipe (tons of black smoke from the smarty)

These trucks are ridiculously fun/awesome to drive. You really just can't go wrong with a CTD...hope that wasn't too biased. Lol

Hmm. My dealer offered me 30k. Do I need a cummins? No. But do I want one? Yes. I'm trying to justify the gas thing for diesel. I'm not worried about spending the money on diesel cause I will get my money out of it for the MPG I get. And o correct?

I should be getting better MPG with a CTD than my hemi. And I rather mod a CTD than a hemi cause you get more from it.

Mods for a CTD 10x more expensive . Realize that first

If you are just tooling around town the hemi will be better .

The cost of mods are definitely the downside...

Like Dave said, if you're just driving around town, idk. And I'm not saying that because it's not gonna be worked like a truck, but I've heard from lots of people that these trucks are made to run, and that stop and go (short trips) aren't good for the engine. That'll need back up though, because I've never seen any evidence

You gasser can't touch that... All the lower number 14-16 MPG is towing heavy (15,000-20,000# GCW)

7-10K to a oil change...

No spark plugs to change no tune ups required. (Just valve lash every 150K miles)

Most Cummins engines will last past 1 million miles...

I don't have a NEED for my CTD, I just love it. My Hemi was cheaper to mod, but the CTD is much cheaper to run. With the higher price of diesel vs the better mpgs, it probably almost evens out to the same kind of cost to fill up (Just be ready to spend about $125 at the pump cause of a 35gal tank). The advantage comes in on maintenance. You hear all the time people going 15k miles or more on an oil change, there are no plugs/ignition to change on a tune up.

BUT there are also the negatives...
If something breaks, its expensive.
A rebuild job on the front end? $2k
A transmission fix? $4-5k
And lets hope you never have to go here but...
A blown engine? $14k!

Mods are more expensive on the CTD BUT they also get you much further vs your Hemi. You can gain stupid power rather easily if done right with the right modifications to supply the engine with the fuel and air it needs as well as parts to hold up to the extra pressure.

Here is where I am with my truck right now...
Truck $27,000
Rebuilt front end $2,100
Smarty $500
Tires $1,200
Straightpipe $100
Intake mods $100

It all adds up fast and I really haven't gotten started. A built trans is gonna cost me $4,000.

IMO get what you want and what your budget allows, just understand any truck will have issues and advantages, it just depends on which ones you want to deal with

the CTD is a awesome engine, it just sucks that they can't put a transmission behind it that can hold up the potential power the CTD can produce, so if you are planning on modding it, make sure you have a TRANS budget set aside, I know with all the goodies, around her they are about 7k for one.

The manual trans don't really have problems with power other then the clutch (and flywheels on g56)

Before I start throwing out numbers what kind of mpg are you getting out of your hemi?

Agreed and Agreed ^^

Before you stats anything .. make sure you have the funds to put better trans in it .
And while in there better put in a very good TQ converter .. My recommendation is Gorend Trippe Disc .. Love mine
Best mod to date !

65 2009-2012 rams average 16mpg Over 500+ thousand miles Dodge Ram 1500 MPG Reports | Fuelly
91 5.9 CR rams from 03-07(of course these numbers may add a few 6.7L) they average 16.14mpg over nearly a million combined miles.
Dodge Ram 2500 MPG Reports | Fuelly

National average of gasoline is now $3.523- $0.22 a mile
Diesel averages $3.938- $0.24 (3/10) a mile
30k miles of fuel in a cummins will cost $7293.31 or $6,600 in a new ram
You will not be saving any money on fuel costs by getting a cummins and maintenance/mods are more expensive then a 1500

If you really want a cummins go for it but don't think you will be saving any money.
