Hello everyone, new member here!

I recently purchased a pre-owned '10 QC Sport with 40K miles. The day after I picked up the truck the CEL light came on. I have an app for my iPhone that can read DTCs so I immediately checked into it. I came up with a code P3497 - Cylinder Deactivation System Bank 2. I made an appointment with the dealer and after 2-1/2 days apparently all they did was flash the computer because on the way home the CEL light came back on. It was after hours so the following morning I called, explained everything and made another appointment. After having it for another 2-1/2 days they called me and said I needed new solenoids and lifters. They said it would take about a week for the parts and the truck is perfectly safe to drive. So the next week (last Friday) they called and said the parts were in, so I made another appointment for this past Tuesday. I get a call Tuesday afternoon telling me they're still working on the truck and they'll call me tomorrow. I in fact get a call the next day but it wasn't to say the truck was ready. They proceed to tell me that they installed the parts but can't seem to get the timing correct and that I have a cam problem. They have to order a cam which will be in Friday (today). This all isn't making sense to me because the truck ran perfect on 8 cylinders, I just had a problem with the MDS when it tried to switch to 4 cylinders. Well it gets worse... I get a call this afternoon "we've had a bit of a setback. We found out why your engine was misfiring. One of the valve seats dropped down into the short block. We're going to have to give you a new engine".

WTF! New solenoids and lifters make sense, but a cam? And now an entirely new engine! I don't know if I'd trust them to fix me a sandwich let alone install a new engine.

I'm not sure how to feel about this. I'm happy I'm getting a brand new engine but hoping it's not the beginning of a whole new set of problems. I almost feel like they ruined my engine, and now I'm suppose rest easy that they're going to install the new one correctly...

Has anyone heard if this before?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum!

If this is all covered by warranty, I wouldn't worry much at all. A entirely new engine wouldn't be anything I personally would worry about. Now if they were re using parts from the original motor with the new block, I might keep my eye open.

Hope everything goes well! Keep us updated

I wouldn't trust them anymore. Seems they did more harm than good. Sounds like they messed up fixing the MDS system. Make sure you have a written warranty signed by them in your hands before you leave. Check for leaks, tranny issues. They had to disconnect the 2 and who knows what else to remove the old and put in the new. A lot has to be disturbed to do a motor swap.

It's probably safer than having them doing the internal work. It will likely just be a crate motor. Sounds like a win win. Since the dealer is doing the work, it's all warranty work.

It is all covered by warranty thankfully. I purchased a 3yr/75k b-b extended warranty. This is still under the NYS Lemon Law preowned vehicle warranty which is 60 days or 3k miles, whichever comes 1st. I put about 2,100 mi on the truck since I bought it, so it's getting close as far as the Lemon Law is concerned.

That'd be sweet! May as well tell 'em to make it a stroker motor too while they're at it! :signs8:

I completely agree! You're talking about removing the grill, tranny cooler and radiator. Disconnecting the exhaust, A/C components, unplugging all the electrical connections and any linkages. Then you have to remove and replace all the items that are being reused like the alternator, power steering pump and A/C compressor. I YI YI! The list goes on and on... :nutkick:

I put a call into them yesterday to see exactly what kind of engine they're going to install. We were playing phone tag so I never got an answer. I hope it's a crate motor and all they have to reuse is the accessories. I'm on the fence as to whether I should try to pursue NYS Lemon Law or not.

I bet it's a long block. So you'll still have belt accessories at least swapped over.

You're right, they put a request in for a long block and intake manifold. The problem is the long block isn't available, it's on back order. I think they're going to have to get me a crate motor.

We shall see! Apparently valve seats drooping down into the cylinder on the 5.7 Hemi is a pretty common problem.
Especially if the engine was ever overheated.

I would bet chrysler might say rebuild it seeing as prices of crate motors are pretty high.

***Update***

The dealer ordered me a new short block and new heads because the long block isn't available. My concern is metal in the oil pan and or metal in the intake manifold since they're going to be re-using those two parts. If they're smart, which I hope they are, they'll use the new cam, lifters and solenoids they already ordered. I hope to hell they clean the snot out of the pan and manifold!

It's never overheated while I've owned it. Who knows what happened during the 40k miles before though. I did however replace the thermostat about a week after I bought the truck because it was running cold, about 180 degrees. Once I installed the new thermostat it ran at about 195-200. Could a bad "open" thermostat be an indication of a prior overheat?
