Recently purchased a '13 QC Express. After being a loyal GM guy all my life, I must say the folks at Ram got this truck right. I absolutely love it!

Couple questions, being this is my first new vehicle. When is the right time to do the first oil change? I have it for about 2 months now and it has 1500 miles on the clock. Ive heard a couple people say break it in for the first 1k miles and then switch over to synthetic...what are your recommendations?

Also, what brand oil are you guys suggesting? Ive used Mobil 1 Full Synthetic for all my other vehicles. However this is my first Chrysler product.

Any thoughts on brand of filters too?

Thanks

Welcome to MOPAR world.... I too am new to RAM trucks, came from GM trucks as well.

I got mine in June and waited till about 3500 miles to do its first oil change.
I went with Mobile 1 with Mobile 1 filter.

Ill give it 7k miles before my next change but I would like to try Amsoil since ive heard good things about it.

Enjoy your truck, I am

Change oil now, even consider using conventional oil for another quick run. get the wear metals out of there, when you marry all the metal together for the first time wear does happen and should be encouraged. Synthetics are really good at anti wear and are great after you get it broken in. Read the synthetic thread, Mobil One and Penzoil ultra or platinum are great choices, or if you felt like it you could even step up to Amsoil or Redline. I agree, I have had 2 chevy trucks and 3 Fords, and this is my second Dodge and this generation is the best of all of them.

I would look at FULL synthetic media for filters, I like Royal Purple but there are others as well. Full synthetic filters have no paper in them.

Agreed. The general consensus is to get an oil change in early and get the break in "earl" out of it.

3k miles should be a good change point. My dealer sticker said 10k for first oil change and I said no way.

I used Rotella T6 in everything. Trucks/Subarus/Dirt bikes/ Street Bikes and still no issues. Great oil tons a reviews.

Thanks for all the responses....I'm thinking of going with Mobil 1 as I have used that in the past and have had good luck. I've used Royal Purple as well as Amsoil in past and I know there are guys out there who swear by it, but I always seem to go back to Mobil 1. Probably cuz its easy to grab and Walmart.

Any idea's about oil filters??? Ive heard that Chrysler changed filters on the 2013+ 5.7.

Is this true?

Thanks

Well I finally got the oil change done this weekend. This was not an easy process.

First I went to Walmart to pickup the oil and filter. The oil was no problem...went with Mobil 1 Full Syn.

Started looking for the filter. All the recommended filters appeared to be entirely too large for my 2013 Hemi. I went online and found the part number for my application of Mopar and Mobil 1 had changed from 2012 to 2013. Left Walmart in disgust as they did not have a filter that fit.

Went to Advanced Auto and the only filter they had that would fit was the Mobile 1 - M1-113. Luckily advanced had a special with the filter and 5 qt of oil for $31.95. This was the correct filter size.

Had a bear of a time getting the factory filter off. Because the filter is so small, I had to go back to the part store to buy a smaller filter wrench. Once I got it lose I used the 1 gallon ziplock bag trick. Did not spill one drop of oil.

All in all, the change itself was easy, because both part centers did not have the correct filter number in the system it took longer than I wanted on my Saturday Afternoon.

Sweet. I just did my oil change for the first time yesterday at 4200 miles. I noticed the filter was also very tight!! I used the filter wrench that looked like channel locks with teeth. I went with Pennzoil Dyno oil for a quick run (maybe I'll go 2000 miles on it) before I change to synthetic. (RedLine) My local walmart had a sale, I got two 5 quart jugs for 20 bucks. Couldn't pass it up at that deal. I know Pennzoil has good synthetic oil, but don't know much about their conventional oil...

Burla. what do you think of their dyno oil?
