Here's the story, in just a few words: Thank you Discount Tire. You guys remember those black lugs I put on my truck last night? Well leave it to Discount to give me 14mm instead of the 9/16" lugs. To the untrained eye of mine, I couldn't tell a difference so I put them on and torqued them down (or so I thought.) Then this morning when I left for work, I didn't get far down the street and I realized something wasn't right, there was a major wobble in the steering wheel. I went back home, tried to tighten them some more, well it wouldn't work. Got one black lug off before the key stuck to a lug and that was the end of that. It was then I realized that the lugs jacked up the threads on the studs. I called Discount, explained it to the manager. He said it was completely their fault and they would take care of it. He said not to drive it anywhere, a wrecker would be sent to pick it up. Wrecker is taking it to the local Meineke to replace the studs and one of the factory lugs.

This is not the first time I've had to replace studs thanks to Discount. I will say this though, the manager is taking care of it all. He is even doing this all with me explaining it over the phone. I am in there enough though, that I know he would recognize me if he saw me. They made a mistake and will fork the bill, but I'm paying for it in my own way.

Needless to say, right before the tow truck showed up, I took a crapload of pictures. There had better not be a scratch on it when I get it back tomorrow. I cleaned out my truck too - just in case. I have a feeling it's going to be sitting outside tonight.

And after all this, I still don't think I'm going to keep the black lugs, lol.

haha yeah but it was too late then Jeremy. The damage had already been done.

This I hope is the first... and last time you'll ever see that.

I felt it just driving down the road, not even going 20. It was that bad.

so they were the wrong thread? They didn't notice as soon as they threaded it on. I usually hand thread them as far as I can go before I use a socket on them. I would never go back to them again. Make sure they put the correct studs on.

That's what I used. I like em. That sucks man, but its good they're fixing everything. Knew a guy who had this tires rotated out at Discount, and they didn't bolt one of the wheels back on right. When he went to drive away it fell off, and needless to say caused some damage. They paid for everything though, and gave him some new rims and tires also.

Good thing it happened on a city street at 20 rather on the interstate at 75.
I don't know many people that have dealt with Discount and haven't had some kind of trouble. I bought a set of tires from them for my last truck, and had one blow the inner sidewall out less than 30 minutes after I left there. Not really their fault, but they did their best to take care of everything. Ended up with them replacing all 4 tires, inner and outer tie rod ends on both sides, sway links and all it cost me was $35 for an alignment

I'm thinking my next tire purchase (possibly 37s) will be from a vendor online. Prices will be about the same, if not better. I can have them rotated and balanced for free at NTB.

That's what I did. Much better selection of styles and sizes and there's no extra charges for something a local place would have to order

Discount doesn't charge extra if they have to special order nor do you pay shipping which is nice.

Picked up my truck not too long ago. No problems with Meineke - he said it was taken care of. Stopped off at Discount on the way home to return the wrong lugs and to get my money back on them. I thanked the manager for resolving it in the manner he did. He gave me the refund with no problems, shook hands and left. As much as Discount makes mistakes, the fact that they really take care of their customers makes me want to continue to buy my tires from them.

With that being said and that I got my money back on the lugs... I won't be blacking out my rims, at least not at this time. I'm gonna use that $55 on either the weathertech floor mats or maybe finally buy the Lock Pick.

Haha, I've used quite a bit of PD on my truck myself. I've been asked quite a few times what I used. I'm starting to feel like I should get paid for promoting their product too.

Yeah, I've used them for 3 sets of mud tire purchases, 2 worn out replacements, and 1 spare. In that time, they've ordered me the wrong tires 2x, jacked up a stud on my last truck, and now gave me the wrong lugs this time. Each time though, they've made it right, gotta say that for them.

Sorry, didn't realized I hadn't addressed your question. Yeah, they were 14mm (apparently) instead of 7/8. I used a torque wrench and put them just on one tire myself at home (Discount was pretty busy when I picked them up and I really didn't want to risk them jacking up my rims or scratching them). I was in a hurry, didn't hand tighten them much, just grabbed the torque wrench and started tightening them down. Guess I'm stronger than I think because they wrong lugs went on pretty easily.

Yeah, they got the right studs. They had to buy them straight from the dealer and they used the same factory lugs. Everything is back to the way it was now.

Not a half bad idea, but they would have to be put back on extremely carefully otherwise it would mess up the PD. And after every rotation they would probably have to be resprayed. Then again... for $55, it might be worth a try!
