Down here in bribe country, we got 91 with state law 10% minimum ethanol.

East in Wisconsin they got 92 or 93 octane. All gas is available without any alcohol, either - different refinery region, Mobil Joliet Refinery. The last new one built here - in 1971!

Fuels suck here in Minnesota. All bribery.
Just before I left IA back in 2018 we could buy regular 87 gas without ethanol or 89 & 91 with 10% corn, but then like MN the IAQ farmers lobbied the state to mandate all gas to contain 10% corn, not sure if they now sale premium gas without corn or not... Also never understood why gas with corn has lower gas tax on it compared to gas without corn..

Because it's subsidized by taxpayers elsewhere in the state budgets. Cloak and mirrors. I expect Minnesota did this 1st due to Cargill being in this state.

It's the big agrilobbies that got gasohol mandates pushed through bribed legislators.

Not my Ram, this is my Accord K24, 153,000 miles. I pulled the plugs yesterday to try and get a before and after of a few tanks of SL-1. I don't think I'm gonna see a difference in these pistons. 1 and 4 might clean up a bit, but I definitely didn't expect this clean of an inside. Now I know why it runs so good and doesn't burn oil.

You can't clean... clean.... lol.

That is a hell of an engine 150k and that clean. But you probably could benefit around rings, but I doubt you can see that.

what gas you running?
Typically Shell 87E10. The first tank or two were Shell 91E0 with the higher cleaner amount but it's primarily a commuter car so using the premium doesn't make financial sense for long-term.

I did just find a Citgo near the house that is top tier so I might switch to that 87E10 instead.

That is a walking shell commercial right there, I personally wouldnt change but either way thanks for posting.

If you get a chance and have some time, just pop one plug on the ram for comparison. You get same gas in ram?

That old test maybe it is different now, but CITGO caught with pants down. See detergent levels top tier... Funny shell used to be on the bottom, but shell is probably the best example of a rebrand we ever heard of. Top 3 great, likely add chevron to that. The only reason I don't use a top 4 on this list is because I use Costco plus si-1, but if I wasn't using si-1 I would use top 4 on that list, or top 3 and Chevron.

Dilemma. The 2 Top Tier gas stations closest are both Sunoco and show the Top Tier label on every pump, 87/89/91 at one, and 87/89/91/93 at the other.

There is an Exxon just a couple miles further 87/89/93, but it does not have the Top Tier designation anywhere, not on pump, not on windows, nowhere. According to Top Tier website the gas is not Top Tier if label is missing, but the TT web site lists the location as good-to-go.

So for the past year I have filled out the contact form at the Top Tier website, 3 times, inquiring about the Exxon - crickets.

Price is not an issue as all gas near me is within $0.05/gallon. Sheesh.

Sure would be nice to have some new data. You'd think the higher Top Tier blenders would push this, maybe there aren't any anymore?
Since consumer reports dont share, yeah it's a quagmire. The things or media is concerned about anything interesting and important doesn't make the list.

SI-1 is just good insurance with the current information. If Shell and Chevron aren't the best, they have me fooled.

I've only owned it for 3k-ish miles, bought mid May. Seemed to be taken care of before I bought it, this confirms that. Especially with the not burning oil, very common K series ring issue.

Ram gets mixed gas fills, lately it's been Kwik Trip 91E0 (not top tier), Woodman's 91 (I think E0, not top tier), and Citgo 93E10 (top tier). On road trips it also gets Love's 91 (I think E10, not top tier). The Shell is on my way to work and is not convenient to get the Ram gas there.

Just carry some Red Line Sl-1 with you. I poured it into an empty Stabil bottle so I could measure out 1 ounce per 15 gallons non-Top Tier gasoline.

It's do-your-own Top Tier gas!

I've seen you mention your keep-it-handy idea, and I always have some in the garage, but your StaBil bottle use is a great idea. ;)

I might even try this with Top Tier gas.

Does anybody know if it changes the octane rating ,i can't see it changing it by much if it does, but still kind of curious if anybodies looked into that aspect of it.

Too bad Dave Granlund is gone from Red Line.

Good luck with the Conoco-Phillips Corporate Receptionist.

From red line..

  • Reduces need for octane by up to two points
Which to me sounds dubious, not something I ever believed, in fact my assumption is the UCL might take it in the other direction and PEA does not change octane at all. I would say at best it is neutral, which is just an opinion.

I'd wager they're referring to a cleaned engine that was dirty doesn't need the same octane for static ignition timing.

i.e. - carboned cylinders are known to have hot spots that can cause detonation from the recommended octane.

Creative marketing.
