What’d you guys recommend for first oil change interval after cam and lifter swap?
I caught it while the lobe was fully in tact so no metal in the engine.

Side question, my new hot idle oil pressure is 30-31 psi, used to be 33-34. I did do an MDs delete cam so is it anything to be concerned with?

My ecu engine idle rpm was set at 510 when I was looking through settings, should I increase it? I don’t want to murder my fuel eco too bad

Shouldn't even be concerned about idle up to 750rpm & fuel eco.
Not good to sit idling in a Hemi for long periods anyway.

Type of oil & filter can easily change oil pressure 3 psi or more also.

Red Line 5w/30 from here on out, is my recommendation ... or an oil that is high in Molybdenum/ZDDP for added protection ... there's more good info in the synthetic oil and filter threads that'll give you a good understanding of the benefit(s) ...

Red Line 5w/30 and an Royal Purple 20-820 oil filter would be my recommended oil strategy from what I've learned here in the RAMforum.

Good luck, and Happy motoring!

I’ll try out the 750 idle

Not sure about the redline, price tag is a little scary on that one. Internet seems to think it’s for the hi -po and track guys, I’m just a daily. Royal purple seems more affordable. Disclaimer I know pretty much nothing about oils, I just know those are considered high quality along with amsoil and such.

I run pennzoil platinum ultra or premium what ever it is called. Been running that for years in all my veh and im happy with it catch it on sale and its cheaper than dino oil. Running the mopar filter as i tried both fleetguard and donaldson and i would get the start up tick for a few seconds and do not get that with the OEM. Were are you going to bump up idle speed? I have always wanted to do that but did not realize you could.

Just run a good synthetic. Lot of good choices now compared to 10 years ago.

I switched back to Amsoil after running redline for years because of the price jump on redline.

With the PC discount if you order all you stuff from them the prices are actually pretty dang good with all the coupons. I order maybe 2 x a year for ALL of my stuff…. until i can get a good $500 worth of an order and do it all at once. Then you can use all the coupons that add up over a few months that they send you to your account.

New cams and lifter OCI? Id do a very short initial one of like 1,000 miles. Then go to your standard OCI’s

All JMO

I got the mpvi3 from hp tuners for turning off MDs but it has full tuning capabilities including idle speed ect

750 idle, 5k oci after the initial which should be no longer than 500 miles. If no redline, then Penzoil ultra platinum, can usually find around $30 for 5 quarts, throw in some lubiguard 15 ozs for extra protection.

7 qts of Penzoil avg $6 quart
Lubigard 15oz bottles $17
Filter 16
Total pprox $75 per oci, unless you are in canada, then you're priced upwards from there

Upping idle more important than type of oil

I have been using the rl 5/30 & rp20-580 for a couple years & have my idle set at 750, cheap insurance IMO, but only put 7500 miles a year on my truck.
I agree that lower oci’s & upping idle speed probably more important than brand of oil as long as it’s a quality synthetic.

Myself, when an engine has been apart I always liked either a 30 minute run or if convinced that no grit or garbage got in while woking on it I'd go a few hundred miles then change it and the filter.

Any downsides to the higher idle?

I’m betting I got a little bit of grit in there cleaning the mating surfaces

Change the oil now then. Royal Purple is not an oil you want in a Hemi,it's probably one of the worst oils you can stick in a Hemi's crankcase.

I'm going through this now.

Personally, I'd get a couple changes worth of conventional oil and a couple cheap filters, and do one change after running the truck for an hour, and then another change after 100 miles or so.

You could even do another change at another relatively short interval, if you wish.

After that, use good qualty oil and filters.

Back before they were worried about emissions,750 was a pretty standard idle rpm,and a 1,000 idle rpm wasn't uncommon on hi-po cars. Here's a tune up sticker for a 1970 AAR 340 Cuda, and it called for a 1,000 rpm.

Heres a tune up sticker for a lowly little 318 2 barrel, and it called for 750.

If Redline is out of your price range, run Pennzoil Ultra Platinium 5W-30 with a bottle of Lube Gard,it's generally considered to be a poor mans Redline, but change it every 5,000 miles.Royal Purples 20-820 is one of the better filters you can run,but they're getting hard to find and expensive, the next best one appears to be Frams FE2 but it's only available at Wally Worlds and not all Wally Worlds have it in stock.
Go through the filter thread for other options
