I am wondering if anyone changes their oil by using one of the pumps through the dipstick and if so, what kind did you use and how did it work.

I would rather not crawl under the truck, and with the filter on top, this would be an oil change without lying on the cement.

Also a money saver.

Thanks in advance!

To change oil on a pentastar powered Ram? It's more difficult to reach the oil filter housing than it is the drain plug. The drain plug is way out in the open and even a fat guy like me can roll right under to get at it.

I use a small TRAC brand oil extractor for some of my outdoor power equipment to empty fuel tanks, etc. It's nice for sucking out master cylinders, power steering fluid, etc. It's a small one though at only about a gallon.

Tried to suck out oil through the dipstick on my 6.7 from a oil change gone wrong that had it over full. Couldn't find a tube small enough to get to oil. Much less the bottom of the pan.

I have one for changing oil in boat engines. I’ll never use it on a road vehicle. The drain plug is faster, and the suction tank leaves some oil in the bottom of the sump. That residue is where any heavy contaminants like metal shavings will be concentrated.

I would never try to do an oil change using a suction pump. As much as i hate the quick oil change shops i would do that before going the suction pump route

Honestly, get some heavy duty ramps (just need 2) drive up the front end of the truck on the ramps and you will have way more room then on jack stands. Have the socket and ratchet ready and slide under with a creeper. You can let it drip for a few hours which is what I do and if really paranoid about getting those last contaminants out. Pour a quart of really cheap oil 5w20 through the fill and watch it pour the crap out.

Or get the fumoto valve. It's a lever to get oil flowing out. Even easier.

The problem with sucking it out the dipstick tube is that the tube doesn’t go to the bottom of the pan so you’re going to be leaving oil in the bottom of the pan.

You would have to find a tube small enough to fit in the dipstick tube to get to the bottom of the pan.

I have very small tubing and it only goes down about a foot or so before it jams. 1/4" OD and still won't pass on the 5.7.

Why would you want to leave the dirtiest few ounces your oil down in the bottom of the oil pan?
